Police presence coverage from 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. Monday – Friday. Three officers have set daily schedules that may be changed from time to time for coverage during co-officer absences. Off-schedule hours may be required during special events on campus such as Home Craft Days, graduation, etc.

The Mountain Empire Community College Police Department invites applications for the position of Campus Law Enforcement Officer. We are actively seeking an officer who possesses depth of experience and abilities, providing the total campus population with an environmentally safe and secure area.

Duties, responsibilities, and requisite skills include but are not limited to providing vehicle and foot patrol of the campus; responding to calls for service and investigating suspicious activities; resolving complaints; investigating criminal and traffic incidents; providing first responder aid when required. MECC’s Campus Police Department subscribes to a robust community-oriented policing philosophy in order to fulfill its mission. The officers must be responsive to the safety and security needs of a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students on a college campus and protect life and property and enforce laws of the Commonwealth and the rules and regulations of the college within the appropriate jurisdictional confines. Officers must make independent decisions daily based on knowledge and experience to ensure continuity of police and security services to the MECC campus community. Officers maintain membership with VACP , IACLEA , VACLEA and other professional law enforcement agencies. Performs duties as assigned by the MECC Chief of Police.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA’s/Required Qualifications
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be successful in the position:

  • Ability to perform day-to-day activities with an understanding of the cross-cultural community, treating all individuals with dignity and respect, especially in conflict management.
  • Ability to make mature judgment calls and effective decisions, making positive contributions to agency goals.
  • Possess substantial law enforcement experience that qualifies the candidate to operate on an individual basis.
  • Possess the ability to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing as demonstrated in the application package.
  • Ability to give clear oral instructions to elicit compliance with law, policies, and regulations in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to gather information and write factual reports.
  • Ability to testify truthfully and factually in legal hearings and court.
  • Successfully pass an in-depth background investigation, police officer physical, and a psychological examination, subsequent to a conditional offer of employment.

Minimum required qualifications:

  • Must currently be certified as a police officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Department of Criminal Justice Services ( DCJS ) with the ability to maintain the certification.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have a valid Virginia motor vehicle operator’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must have met and be able to maintain DCJS minimum performance standards for police officers including but not limited to professionalism, legal issues, communication, patrol, investigations, defensive tactics/use of force, weapons, driver training, and physical training.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of law enforcement, as well as security and safety concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Must provide proof of the ability to safely and appropriately handle agency issued weapons and qualify annually in the use of agency issued firearms in accordance with the minimum standards established by DCJS .
  • Free of convictions past, present, and future of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.

Additional Considerations
School resource officer experience.
Certified and experienced trainer in one or more aspects of law enforcement.
Previous experience in community-oriented policing.
Training in Title IX and/or Clery Act.
Higher education courses in criminal justice or related field.
Current or former DCJS General and/or Specialty Instructor Certification.
Previous experience as a campus law enforcement officer.
Higher education law enforcement experience.
Bilingual.
Operation of a State Vehicle Yes Supervises Employees No Required Travel
Daily local travel.
Occasional statewide, overnight travel.
