Program/Position Description

The Inn Enhanced Shelter Program offers 24/7 enhanced shelter and related support for adults experiencing housing instability that emphasizes trauma informed care, safety, stability and encourages sustained growth in independent living skills. Referrals to the program come from King County Coordinated Entry. Participants include adults with high barriers to housing who are eligible for permanent supportive housing. Many shelter guests have chronic and acute mental illness, medical conditions, active additions, and trauma. This is a low-barrier, harm reduction program in an environment that welcomes diversity, promotes individual dignity, respect and honors each person’s unique experience.

Responsibilities

Direct service to people who are experiencing homelessness

  • Using Trauma Informed Care practices and instill the ethos of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging as well as promoting Anti-racism at the program level.
  • Responsible for Front Desk duties and responsibilities.
  • Monitor shelter throughout the shift employing crisis management skills where necessary to assist guests in difficult situations.
  • Assist Program Supervisor and Management on other duties such as special projects.
  • Enforce building and program rules including bar policy.
  • Maintain a safe and comfortable enhanced shelter environment.
  • Assist front desk with janitorial and maintenance support and other duties.
  • Model adherence to CCS Mission, Beliefs and Values, shelter rules, policies, and procedures to all staff and shelter guests.
  • Assist the Program Supervisor with ensuring all shifts are covered.
  • Assist with serving meals prepared off-site and follow best practices for food safety. Maintain current Food Handler’s card.
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops, retreats, and in-service classes as provided.
  • Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment; participate with other staff members in group decision-making process.
  • Inform supervisors of facilities and client-related issues.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Conditions

This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious material. Other exposures could include cleaning supplies, bedbugs, chemicals involved in pest control, paint and other materials used in building maintenance, building temperature fluctuations, dust, noise, and odors. Working conditions include interruptions, crisis response, and regular interactions with individuals who are dealing with issues of chemical dependency and/or mental illness, or are experiencing anger or frustration.

Physical and Mental Acuity Requirements

  • Able to hear telephone rings, phone conversation and face-to-face conversation, door bells and emergency alarms.
  • Able to speak clearly in person and on the telephone.
  • Able to hand write legibly.
  • Vision that enables person to read normal size print and handwritten notes; and distance and peripheral vision than enables person to monitor living spaces and identify concerns that require staff response.
  • Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
  • Able to walk the entire building and ascend and descend stairs quickly to move from one floor to another in order to respond to emergency situations.
  • Mobility/dexterity of hands/arms to enable keying into a unit or other locked area as well as using computers and other office equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds.
  • Regularly able to perform duties as assigned.
  • Able to make independent decisions and apply sound judgment in performing job duties.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience working with people experiencing homelessness or similar population.

  • Work history that demonstrates reliability and dependability; ability to interact and communicate well with others; ability to provide leadership to staff.
  • Commitment to harm reduction program model including Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging and Anti-racist philosophies. Commitment to working within a low barrier setting where guests may be struggling with both mental illness and substance use.
  • Experience or knowledge of mental illness, addictions and crisis intervention/de-escalation techniques.
  • Must have a reliable phone or voice mail service at all times in which to be reached.
  • Preference will be given to candidates holding a current Food Handler’s Card and CPR/First Aid training.
  • Excellent written, oral communication and computer skills.
  • Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multi-cultural situations.
