Position Purpose
The Lead Animal Keeper oversees and provides leadership over crews and personnel performing a variety of duties relating to animal control to protect the public’s health and safety and prevent the spread of rabies and other diseases.
Essential Functions
1 Facilitates and leads lower level animal control personnel and staff to ensure that animal control activities are performed correctly and in compliance with City standards, policies, and protocols; ensures all personnel understand assignments; monitors work assignments, gives instructions, and facilitates adoption and customer service operations.
2 Perform a wide range of administrative tasks and activities to ensure the effective and efficient operations of the Animal Services department; processes adoptions, manages paperwork, and ensures all assignments are completed.
3 Performs daily inspections of the shelter sites, monitors maintenance and cleaning, ensures appropriate care of animals, monitors daily walking boards, and performs general inventory ensuring all necessary supplies are in stock.
4 Processes, facilitates, and completes adoption operations and paperwork; answers questions and concerns regarding adoption processes and performs all research on animal being adopted.
5 Assists citizens in finding lost animals; processes intakes from owner surrenders or strays; keeps accurate records and files including vaccinations and other information.
6 Oversees the actions of various crews and personnel handling animals and related materials; provides direction and leadership to ensure all activities are performed according to regulations and standards.
7 Processes dangerous dog and animal cruelty cases by gathering needed information and filing warrants to begin the process for formal legal hearings.
8 Educates the public on standards of care and the benefits of spay or neuter and microchip services; educates public on city ordinances as it may pertain to their situation.
9 Maintains records and completed activity; checks and reviews citation paperwork, violation notices, owner surrender forms, and bite reports.
10 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE:
- One (1) year of experience in an animal related, social services, community outreach, and/or program development field which involved one (1) or more of the following:
- Animal feeding/care experience which must have included public contact
- Handling customer inquiries and complaints
- Educating customers about animal safety and care
- Assisting with evaluation of animals
- Enforcing animal control ordinances
LICENSE(S) and/or CERTIFICATION(S):
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
OTHER REQUIREMENT(S):
- No Animal cruelty convictions.
- Subject to extensive walking and bending.
- Subject to inclement weather conditions.
- Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must pass physical exam including drug/alcohol testing.
PREFERENCE(S):
- Experience in an animal shelter/veterinarian clinic is preferred.
- Lead work/supervisory experience is preferred.
- English/Spanish bilingual skills are preferred.
Dallas Animal Services: This position is for a Lead Animal Keeper at Dallas Animal Services. The ideal candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and possess strong interpersonal skills. They must also maintain the ability to establish and continue effective working relationships with city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees, volunteers, the public and community organizations. Preferred candidate must be able to work collaboratively with other staff members and volunteers as well as be creative and assist with “brainstorming” ideas for overall programming, events, and projects as the need arises. Desired candidate will be comfortable working around animals.
Supplemental Information
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.
Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
