The Lead Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) is a supervisory position in the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) for Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) control in Sedgwick County and 56 other Kansas counties (known as Area “C”) as assigned by Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The Lead DIS supervises the investigative team assigned to Area C, ensuring timely STI and HIV disease investigations and interventions to control the spread of disease and protect the public from health threats. In addition, the Lead DIS performs the duties of a DIS, including STI and HIV case and contact investigations and specimen collection. The Lead DIS develops collaborations and professional relationships with health partners for STI and HIV control. The Lead DIS provides content expertise for STI and HIV in the community and consults with medical providers and other health partners about the diagnosis and treatment of patients and the prevention, detection, and reporting of STI and HIV.

Supervise Area C STI Control Staff.

  • Conduct monthly audits for Area C DIS to evaluate how effective training and monitoring of performance is.
  • Assign work to staff. Evaluate and shift resources to high priority needs and coordinate actions with KDHE and STI-TB Control Program Manager as required.
  • Evaluate and document staff work before sending to KDHE. Ensure accurate data entry and appropriate formatting

Investigate and intervene in the STI and HIV transmission process to control the spread of disease.

  • Initiate investigation within 24 hrs. of receipt of case per KDHE protocol or document prohibiting circumstances
  • Interview within 7 days of initiation or document prohibiting circumstances.
  • Conduct contact investigations by interviewing and providing testing or referral per KDHE guidelines or document prohibiting circumstances.
  • Perform timely data entry within 24 hrs. in accordance with Field Service Manual or document prohibiting circumstances.

Collaborate and consult with private sector and community partners for disease intervention and partner management.

  • Consult with providers in the private sector, health departments and federally qualified health agencies in the region regarding STI and HIV, making recommendations regarding diagnosis and treatment of STI and provide information facilitating the reporting of communicable diseases.
  • Present communicable disease lectures and in-service training to physicians, nurses, students, and civic groups.
  • Conduct, participate in and support outreach programs in a variety of venues which may be after normal work hours including weekends. These venues include but are not limited to bars, clubs, LGBT events, churches or other public events.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in science or a related field. Three years of experience in disease investigation or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies. One year experience with Windows-based computer environment, fax, and multi-line telephone system.

Preferred Qualifications: At least three years of experience as a Disease Intervention Specialist. Two years supervisory job experience. One year venipuncture experience. At least three years of experience in providing customer service to the public or working with diverse populations in a collaborative manner. Bilingual in English and Spanish. CPR Certified. Completed ICS 100 and 700 (Incident Command System) training. Completed KDHE DIS Orientation and has successfully passed KDHE DIS Field Service Manual Examination. Completed KDHE HIV Counselor Training.
