Job Description Summary
In support of the Student Affairs Learning Outcomes, the Wellness and Recreation team manages multiple fitness and recreation facilities and coordinates a variety of on- and off-campus recreation and wellness education programming. Alongside professional staff and in collaboration with other team members, the Lead Fitness Center Assistant is responsible for co-supervising fitness center student employees, managing day-to-day facility operations, coordinating fitness center services and programs. The Lead Fitness Center Assistant strives to create welcoming environments that contribute to the University by building community, increasing the students’ pride in their university, and improving students’ healthy sense of self. All Lead Fitness Center Assistants are members of the Department of Student Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs.
Responsibilities
- Work alongside the graduate assistants and professional staff to supervise Fitness Center Assistants and Fitness Session Leaders including hiring, training, team development, performance evaluation and accountability.
- Through supervisor shifts, oversee the day-to-day operations of the facilities in partnership with campus departments including Public Safety, Dining Services, Facilities Management, Custodial Services, and Information Systems and Technology.
- Manage facilities by ensuring all equipment and furnishings are working properly and that facilities are clean and tidy. Responsibilities include routine maintenance and cleaning as well as submitting work requests for major issues to campus departments.
- Jointly manage amenities, programs and services including GroupX and sports and recreation gear checkout
- Along with Student Engagement Marketing team, oversee publicity including website, social media and digital signage
- Address employee needs regarding scheduling, including approval of shift changes
- Provide on-site supervision of group fitness and other programs as necessary
- Meet weekly 1-1 with direct supervisor
- Attend weekly meetings with the Lead Fitness Center Assistants team
- Lead monthly team meetings with all Wellness and Recreation staff members
- Assist in Student Engagement department-wide events
- Assist in other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- CPR/First Aid/AED Certified through the end of the academic year. If an applicant is not already certified, certification will be coordinated by the Department of Student Engagement upon employment.

- CPR/First Aid/AED Certified through May 2024
- Ability to climb a ladder
- Ability to lift objects of 45lbs
Special Instructions to Applicants
There are four positions available, each with one primary area of focus:
- Operations and Competition: Manage Fitness Center Services such as sports gear and fitness on demand. Coordinate ongoing day-to-day operations by ensuring all equipment, accessories and facility systems are working properly. This position is also responsible for creating and implementing monthly Panther Sports Tournaments.
- GroupX: Coordinate GroupX and Spin sessions by training and supervising student fitness session leaders. Manage GroupX set-up and clean-up, oversee marketing, and manage online Rec Portal calendar.
- Personnel: Coordinate employee scheduling, hiring, training, team development, performance evaluation and accountability.
- Communications and Outreach: Design on Canva and post signage for Wellness & Recreation events, i.e., holiday hours, finals week hours, semesterly hours, interterm hours and events. Create weekly newsletter for fitness center staff and distribute content to fitness center assistants/staff via email and Groupme. Track Wellness & Recreation emails and responding to emails for staff and other inquiries.
