Description
At MASS MoCA maintenance staff are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all institutional buildings and grounds, including but not limited to construction, repair, and renovation of buildings and related structures, grounds maintenance, fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices such as carpentry, flooring, drywall, cement and masonry work, painting, welding, roofing, landscaping and other related trades.
This working lead position organizes and oversees the assignment and tracking of tasks for the day-to-day operation of the Buildings and Grounds Department in a fast-paced, changing environment. Takes on a variety of tasks, oversees and inspects employees’ work, and coaches employees where and when needed. Must be available to work events, weekends, any overtime and holidays as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports Manager, Maintenance & Construction in coordination and assignment of weekly tasks and priorities, coordination of event-related work, aligning available staff and schedules (including vacations and absenteeism) as necessary to ensure that all work is completed
- Performs all functions of the maintenance staff role, including various carpentry and maintenance tasks such as;
- Painting and taping
- Wall construction framing, drywall, finishing
- Assisting in preparation for special museum functions by setting up facilities
- All aspects of lawn and grounds care, including occasional trash removal for festivals and large events
- All aspects of snow and ice removal including shoveling, sanding, and operating snow blowers and snow plows
- Oversee daily operations of the maintenance staff by setting the example for ensuring work is completed on time, safely, and at the highest quality
- Perform regular inspections to ensure buildings and grounds are maintained and meet safety standards
- Provides training and guidance to maintenance staff in techniques and procedures for a wide variety of work tasks, including use of tools and equipment, with a particular emphasis on safety.
- Works cooperatively with department heads to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations
- Works with Maintenance and Construction Manager to ensure necessary equipment, materials and supplies are adequately stocked and maintained; coordinates procurement of supplies and equipment as needed.
- Collaborates within and across departments to communicate needs, expectations and potential impacts of maintenance team’s work
- Assists with supplies orders, including local vendor pickups
- Assisting in preparation for special museum functions by setting up facilities
- Attending MASS MoCA meetings or acting on committees as needed/assigned
Requirements
Qualifications
- Education: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Ideal applicants will have a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience performing maintenance work; including taping and painting
- Ideal applicants will have a minimum of 2-3 years supervisory experience in construction, fabrication, or related fields
- Ideal applicants must have experience with equipment and materials used to perform maintenance work, including skills in using power tools
- Applicants must be able to follow verbal and written instructions, and would ideally be able to read and interpret documents such as plans, blueprints, specifications, and drawings.
- Applicants must be able to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, staff members, and others at the museum.
- Must be OSHA 10-hour trained, have equivalent demonstrable safety knowledge, or be able to achieve certification
- May need to work varied shifts or irregular hours as needed
- Ability to work on weekends/holidays is a must
- May be required to operate motor vehicles based on the assignment.
Work Conditions
- Maintenance staff must be able to work indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to adverse weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds or greater; are required to climb ladders and scaffolds.
- For employment at MASS MoCA, candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination will be required for employment.
- Must have the ability to wear PPE, as necessary.
As defined by the National Labor Relations Act, this position is part of the bargaining unit for UAW Local 2110.
Minimum starting wage: $21.00/hour.
