Description
Performs intermediate to skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and cleaning of county facilities, land, and equipment. Supervises subordinate personnel, including training of new personnel. Additionally, this position also oversees staff scheduling. This position is not responsible for disciplinary action of subordinates.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Director and the Dubuque County Auditor.
Job Duties
- Provides direction to maintenance and custodial workers; reviews the work of assigned staff and verifies accuracy; assists in training staff in their assigned areas of work, including work methods, procedures, and techniques; assists in the scheduling of employees; performs supervision in the absence of the Facilities Director.
- Performs electrical, plumbing, and mechanical maintenance work in the repair and maintenance of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment, electrical wiring, and plumbing systems.
- Performs daily custodial tasks.
- Monitor/inventory cleaning supplies and maintenance items.
- Performs snow removal on properties owned by Dubuque County.
- Maintains records, logs and prepares reports.
- Serves on the “on-call list” for emergencies.
- Follows prescribed protocols for safety.
- Work with vendors, suppliers, and county staff members to further the directives of the Facilities Department.
- Administrative tasks include, but not limited to, purchasing card coding, maintenance billing, timecard approval, supply inventory, supply ordering,
- Takes lead on creating necessary maintenance projects from bidding to completion, with the approval of the Facilities Director and/or Dubuque County Auditor.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalency, and 5 years of experience in mechanical, electrical, and general repair work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must have a valid State Driver’s License and maintain it throughout the duration of employment.
Complete and pass a criminal background history check.

- Basic understanding of plumbing, carpentry, and electric principals and safety precautions.
- An understanding and ability to operate appropriate lifts as needed to perform duties of the job.

- Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits effective use of a keyboard and mouse.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, squat, bend, twist, reach and crawl.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee has exposure to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud. Personal Protective Equipment is provided and is required to be utilized at all times.
