Job Description
PSE’s Clean Energy Strategy team is working to build a clean energy future. Washington’s new Clean Energy Transformation Act sets a trajectory for electric utilities to be carbon neutral by 2030 and using 100% clean energy by 2045. The Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Analyst will contribute to these efforts by developing models and performing quantitative and qualitative analysis related to DER planning and/or acquisition, which expand the Company’s knowledge of how to value and operate DERs. This position is particularly focused on the financial valuation of benefit streams DERs can provide, such as T&D deferral, renewable energy, ancillary services, customer benefits, and social equity in support of PSE’s DER acquisition efforts.
The DER Analyst develops and builds interdepartmental consensus on analytical approaches and related critical input assumptions that will shape the Company’s DER strategy and/or its implementation. The Analyst is responsible for developing tools / templates that can be used for the repeatable evaluation of various DER technologies and program implementations, combining value streams that benefit multiple actors, with a focus on PSE and individual customers. The successful candidate will research trends in long-term energy markets including policy issues that will impact the Company’s long-term resource strategy. S/he will also effectively communicate analytical methods, assumptions, and results with key internal and external stakeholders to lay the foundation for cost recovery.

Job Responsibilities
- Oversees the development of methodologies for integrating multiple DER value streams into a single view that captures customer and PSE benefits and costs.
- Works collaboratively and cross-functionally to engage key stakeholders in the development of the methodology.
- Creates or refines financial models that project the long-term value of DERs deployed in various use cases /operating configurations, including attaching value to local T&D deferral, system-wide capacity, energy market participation, direct customer payments, ancillary services, etc.
- Conducts analysis informing cost allocation used in the development of revenue requirements for customer-facing DER products and services.
- Supports the origination, analysis, structuring, documentation and execution of DER project and portfolio acquisitions.
- Be responsible for various internal administrative functions that are required to support the development and acquisitions of projects, plans, builds, and performs DER financial analysis using spreadsheets and/or integrating with other PSE tools and processes, such as AURORA, Delivery System Planning, Loadseer, etc.
- Works cross-functionally to build alignment on approach and gather key inputs.
- Develops and maintains input databases necessary to perform long-term DER planning analysis.
- Identifies and develops means to address critical energy policy issues that may affect the Company’s DER acquisition strategy.
- Effectively communicates results of research and analyses in writing and presentations, including creating supporting materials.
- May oversee contracts with vendors / consultants as appropriate to develop modeling tools / templates and/or key input databases.
- Works with external stakeholders to develop consensus around DER planning issues.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in energy related industry including complex analysis.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Math, or related field.
- Experience building complex spreadsheets to analyze questions.
- Demonstrated ability to be a supportive team member.
- Solid written, interpersonal, and group communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with financial modeling for DERs and/or non-wires alternative utility system planning to inform strategy, resource planning and/or acquisition.
- Master’s Degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Math, or related field.
- Experience using Aurora, Sendout, Power World, or other models used for long-term resource planning.
- Experience performing statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated creative problem solving abilities.
- Experience analyzing risk.
- Experience creating and using database applications to support analysis.

The pay range for this position is $73,900.00 – $122,900.00, and this position is eligible for annual goals based incentive bonuses.
