Job Summary
We are looking for a Lead Veterinary Technician to join our Insourcing Solutions team at Boston Children’s Hospital located in Boston, MA.

In the Lead Rodent Veterinary Technician role, you can do that by providing direction and leadership for the daily operations of the Rodent Services veterinary program, collaborating with husbandry staff to ensure the health and welfare of the lab animals in addition to the integrity of the research.

What you will do!
In the Lead Rodent Vet Tech role, you will write and participate in the implementation and training of SOPs as well as oversee adherence to these SOPs. The Lead RVT is responsible for the onboarding and ongoing training of veterinary technicians in areas such as animal assessments/rounds, basic techniques, use of veterinary drugs, equipment monitoring/maintenance and other vet duties. In addition, provide technical skills training to the VTs and research community in support of approved protocols, such as animal handling/restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, blood/tissue sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, pre-, peri-, and post-op observations and euthanasia. You will coordinate veterinary technical staff to ensure there is adequate coverage for the animal health reports. It will be necessary to conduct routine audits of animal holding rooms and procedure spaces to ensure the health and well-being of the animals; as well as ensuring the vet techs are completing rounds.
You will perform daily clinical observations, health examinations of sick animals and provide treatments per SOP; in addition, ensuring and maintaining veterinary records such as, sentinel health reports, drug log audits, inventory supply as well as ordering supplies for the veterinary group. The LRVT will contribute to both the preventative animal health and animal surveillance program, such as specimen collection, processing samples, providing summaries and conducting communications with diagnostic labs. Participate and present in management meetings, and other groups/meetings and interact with research staff to provide solve problems, and address requests and inquiries.
Who are we looking for?
A candidate that possesses a bachelor’s degree in animal science or equivalent is required plus 2-4 years related rodent care and handling experience as well as veterinary technical skills in a research setting. Direct experience working with mice and rats including the ability to perform health assessments, common injection techniques, gavage, phlebotomy techniques, use of injectable and gas anesthesia, training aseptic techniques for rodent surgery. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements listed above. AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level (LAT) or higher, CVT/LVT preferred.
The pay range for this position is $32.00 to 34.00 USD per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
