General Purpose

Leddy Park Arena holds multiple camps throughout the year that require camp counselors and they work within the Burlington, Parks, Recreation & Waterfront’s Department. Camps at Leddy take place during February School Break, April School Break and the Summer. Camp counselors work in cooperation with BPRW staff to help facilitate a recreation camp program which includes; crafts, skating, outdoor time, etc. Camp counselors are responsible for assisting the director in designing and executing camp activities & working with campers to provide a safe, fun and enriching program.

Leddy Arena is seeking camp counselors for the summer. Camps will run from June 26th -August 18th.

Essential Job Functions

  • Follow all departmental and state rules and regulations.
  • Assist in the planning and instruction of the vacation camp program.
    • Program counselors may be asked to lead activities and lead specific groups of children.
  • Check area for safety hazards and report deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings and staff trainings as required.
  • Report all accidents and incidents occurring within jurisdiction to supervisor.
  • Administer proper First Aid as required.
  • Required to be on time when scheduled to work.
  • Required to clean up at the end of the day.
  • Participate in the evaluation process.
  • Participate, if able, in skating programming portion of camp.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Previous experience working with children in a group or individualized situation preferred.
  • High school diploma in progress or equivalent required.
  • College coursework in Education, childhood development, family studies, or recreation preferred.
  • Ability to supervise and organize groups of children for activity programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with discipline problems, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Knowledge of safety principles and practices as they apply to group activities.
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreation and/or leisure activities and group games.
  • A cooperative attitude and a team player.
  • Enthusiasm, patience, a desire to work with children and creativity.
  • Ability/knowledge of ice skating is not required but a positive attribute to camps at Leddy Arena.
