Gritstone brings together distinguished scientific founders, an experienced and diverse management team, a seasoned and successful board of directors and deep financial backing to tackle fundamental challenges at the intersection of cancer genomics, immunology, and immunotherapy design. The company’s goal is to identify and deploy neoantigens for novel treatments of cancer and infectious diseases. In addition to neoantigen therapy development, Gritstone is leveraging its unique antigen discovery platform to define targets for shared antigen immunotherapies, which would provide an opportunity to treat even more patients.

Position Summary:We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our growing legal team. The position will work closely with the Heads of Corporate Legal and IP, as well as business stakeholders at all levels of the company. You will be key in creating processes and practices to improve the day-to-day efficiency and effectiveness of the legal team, facilitate change, and control costs.

This is a generalist role that involves managing and supporting projects across the full range of subject matters, including, most importantly, corporate and contracting matters. You must be able to adapt to changing priorities and business needs, independently manage projects and be proactive in identifying areas of need and generating action plans.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage contract templates, playbooks, and clause libraries for use in our central contract lifecycle management tool and run company-wide trainings on best contracting practices.
  • Play a key role in creating processes and practices to improve day-to-day efficiency and effectiveness of the legal team.
  • Support all corporate governance processes, including preparation for board of directors and committee meetings and organizing and maintaining all corporate records, including through our electronic board portal.
  • Manage the preparation and distribution, and assist with the review of, director and officer questionnaires.
  • Support attorneys with preparing quarterly, annual, and other securities filings (8-K, 10-Q, 10-K, proxy statement, etc.)
  • Manage and optimize all company virtual data rooms.
  • Manage and respond to requests for information and documents from auditors or internal teams (e.g., finance, people or IT teams).
  • Draft and support negotiation of simple agreements, such as NDAs, purchase orders or consulting agreements.
  • Identify and implement legal department tools and policies to streamline new or existing practices, as well as manage design, rollout, and company-wide training for new systems or policies.
  • Develop and enforce processes and policies to ensure internal and external compliance.
  • Manage legal vendors and budget for digital tools operated by the legal team and assist with budget matters and optimizing workflows within the legal department.
  • Support attorneys with the management of our IP portfolio.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams, including with the finance, people, business development and clinical operations teams.

Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with 7+ years of experience with legal project operations and management and/or paralegal work in-house or at a law firm (biotech in-house experience preferred).
  • Proven ability or prior experience developing, implementing, and training on playbooks and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently move projects forward by gaining support needed from others while working in a cross-functional role.
  • Proven track record of collaborating with cross-functional groups (e.g., finance, human operations, IT) to set objectives and produce meaningful results.
  • Strong experience in developing, implementing, and using legal department technology solutions (e.g., Agiloft, Diligent, Docusign e-signature, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and successfully manage multiple deadlines.

Gritstone bio anticipates that the annual base salary for the Director, Legal Operations position could range between $124,500 – $256,606. The anticipated annual base salary for the Senior Director level position could range between $180,000 – $311,000. Compensation will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s credentials for the role, including education, qualifications, and type as well as length of experience. Any offered salary is also based on internal equity, internal position salary ranges, and market data. The salary range listed does not include any applicable bonuses or long-term incentives, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits. Gritstone is a multistate employer and the salary offered will be market competitive. At Gritstone, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

Gritstone’s benefit package includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and paid parental leave. Employees are also eligible to enroll in the 401k plan, which includes a 4% company match with immediate vesting. Employees are eligible to enroll in benefits effective the first day of employment and the competitive Paid Time Off (PTO) begins accruing on the first day as well. The job offer also includes an equity grant and eligibility for annual refresh grants based on performance.
