Legislative Affairs Representative

Summary

This position will support the development and management of relationships with New York State Legislators and New York City Council Members, and key legislative staff, focusing on Brooklyn to support achieving the goals of the Vision 2030 plan, Section 1005, subdivision27-a of the Public Authorities Law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and additional NYPA policies and initiatives, such as development of Clean Path NY and the closure of Peaker Plants.

The Legislative Affairs Representative will ensure direct communication with state and city government officials and staff members to advance NYPA goals, projects, and programs in northern Brooklyn.

The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with elected officials and other stakeholders in New York City. Candidate must possess the ability to address situations with poise, speed, and diplomacy and develop an understanding of the functions and procedures of the New York State Legislature and the New York City Council. #LI-CJ1

Responsibilities

  • Build, cultivate and maintain relationships with state legislative and New York City Council officials and others who have an impact on the business operation and ongoing strategic vision of NYPA.
  • Support the monitoring and coordinated reporting of state and city legislative activities.
  • Identify and report on elected official and community concerns related to NYPA assets and initiatives, including generation and transmission projects.
  • Initiate memoranda and reports on New York State and New York City government actions that impact NYPA’s business plan and policies.
  • Respond to, as determined appropriate by a supervisor, internal inquiries regarding legislative matters.
  • Meet with, as needed and authorized, internal stakeholders on NYPA projects, programs and services that impact state legislative and respective city council districts.
  • Support the monitoring of and reporting on state and city elected official mass and social media activity with regards to impacts on NYPA and the energy industry.
  • Support emergency notifications of state and city elected officials as needed.
  • Develop expertise in the field of energy and the environment including but not limited to energy efficiency, energy services, transmission, climate change, renewable generation, and the marketplace.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working familiarity with LRS, PSC DMM, FERC online Docket and Document Retrieval systems
  • Proficient in Microsoft office programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Proficient in desktop management system
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare clear written document summaries
  • Demonstrated awareness of internal stakeholder interests in legislative and/or regulatory issues.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Associate’s degree required; Business or public administration, government affairs or a related field
  • At least 3 years of experience working in legislative and/or regulatory analysis, preferred
