The Position

The library is currently seeking a Part-Time Librarian with experience in special collections, digital asset management and archives to become a part of the Genealogy & Carlsbad History Division. Carlsbad City Library has one of the largest genealogy print collections in California. The Carlsbad history collection includes original and digitized photos, documents and oral histories. Staff provide research support for the Historic Preservation Commission, City Council, city staff and community members.

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented with proven abilities and experience working with, and maintaining, historical documents and images across a range of media. They will have excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills; an outstanding work ethic, sense of teamwork; and flexibility to work with new programs and services. They will also be able to receive, internalize and grow from feedback, understand confidentiality, assume positive intent and react to stressful situations in a professional manner.

Part-Time positions cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within one fiscal year. Part-Time employees with the City of Carlsbad receive 24 hours of sick leave each fiscal year. The scheduled work hours for Part-Time Librarians will vary and may be distributed over all hours that the Carlsbad Libraries are open, including evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide sterling in person and virtual customer service and instruction in the use of the Genealogy & Carlsbad History division’s various print, electronic and archival resources, including research strategies
  • Conduct biographical and historical research related to the history of Carlsbad utilizing the library’s collections and other resources as needed
  • Identify, receive, document, organize, preserve, and make accessible, donated materials and existing collections related to Carlsbad history, in accordance with standard archival procedures
  • Develop standardized metadata documentation to support precision retrieval of available physical and digitized materials
  • Create simple user guides, troubleshoot technology problems, and effectively document any technology issues
  • Train the general public and new division staff in the use of genealogical tools, approaches and practices
  • Train division staff and volunteers in the use of archiving tools, systems and practices as needed
  • Promote Carlsbad City Library, its services and programs, and participate in community outreach efforts

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and/or active interest in local history and genealogy
  • Experience in processing and digitizing archival collections and creating finding aids
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of reference services for special collections
  • Ability to conduct in-depth research providing answers to complicated reference questions using a variety of sources across various formats
  • Highly developed aptitude for providing excellent customer service and a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with the public, coworkers and invested parties
  • Proficiency working with technology, including mobile devices, computers, Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel and Publisher and online/downloadable content
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible, creative and innovative in approaches to work and in interacting with others
  • Effective communicator in written and oral presentations, especially in the instruction of others

Experience & Education

  • A successfully completed master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science (MLIS/MLS) from an ALA accredited school is required
  • Experience working in a public library or other customer service environment is preferred
  • Experience working with digital asset management systems is highly desired
  • Experience with genealogy research and resources is desired

Physical Requirements:

  • Need to be able to perform frequent downward or upward flexion or turning of the neck, fine finger dexterity and grasp to manipulate the keyboard, telephone, writing instruments, papers, books, manuals, and reports
  • Job entails standing, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching at and above shoulders and twisting at the waist. On an infrequent basis, the incumbent must be able to squat or kneel
