The Position
Glendale Library, Arts & Culture
Glendale Library, Arts & Culture provides the community with the opportunity to seek and share ideas and information that will enrich lives, foster literacy, inspire intellectual curiosity and stimulate the imagination. GLAC is comprised of the Central Library, Brand Library & Art Center and six unique neighborhood branches. Known as the “Jewel City,” Glendale is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County. With a population of more than 200,000, Glendale is a thriving cosmopolitan city that is rich in history, culturally diverse, and home to a vibrant network of businesses and community organizations.
This position is based at the Brand Library & Art Center, a cornerstone for the arts in Southern California since 1956. This unique public library focuses on visual arts and music and provides free services and programs for a diverse community, including a collection of over 110,000 items, subject specialist librarians, exhibitions, concerts, lectures, dance performances, films, and hands-on craft programs for children and adults. Always evolving, Brand Library continues to develop innovative programs, services and collections to serve an ever-widening public interested in the arts. Brand Library & Art Center is a branch of the City of Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Department.
This position focuses on the visual arts at Brand Library & Art Center and has responsibility for collection development and maintenance of art resources and materials, as well as reference/research services, program planning, and community outreach. This position is a unique opportunity for an Art Librarian excited about leadership opportunities and interested in public service and community engagement.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Possesses a broad knowledge of the history, trends, and techniques of visual arts. Maintains an understanding of the contemporary art industry and its current trends.
Assists in supervising and managing the programs and activities for a service area of the Library, Arts & Culture Department. Demonstrates initiative in identifying and recommending improvements to programs, services and work processes related to their specialty area. Recommends policy and procedure amendments as needed.
Plans and implements programs including, but not limited to, storytelling, performances, films, arts and crafts, recitals, gallery programs, training workshops, arts education and other activities.
Performs and coordinates collection development functions for art materials, including locating, selecting, acquiring, maintaining, displaying, digitizing, preserving and weeding.
Possesses a depth of knowledge and experience in a specific specialty area (for this position, visual arts). Provides general reference and research assistance, as well as subject-specific research assistance in the visual arts. Provides coworkers with reference support as needed, and works with Music Librarian to develop an understanding of reference services in that area. Responds to in-depth readers’ advisory, informational and specialty service questions.
Negotiates with vendors as needed and performs project coordination as assigned by management.
Collaborates with coworkers within the Brand Library & Art Center to develop arts education programs related to gallery exhibitions. Partners with coworkers throughout the Library, Arts & Culture Department and City on arts-related programs as assigned, including programming at other libraries.
Routinely acts as lead library staff person or “Person in Charge” as needed. May oversee security as “Person in Charge” to ensure safety of library patrons and other staff members. Exercises lead supervision over lower level staff and directly supervises assigned subordinate staff as needed. May schedule, train, coordinate, and review work of assigned staff. May assist with hiring and evaluating staff.
Assists patrons of all ages in every aspect of utilizing the library.
Assists patrons with circulation functions and financial transactions.
Monitors cash funds, receives monies, makes out receipts, reconciles and balances accounts or statements, and performs mathematic computations with a calculator, personal computer, or manually.
Represents the Library, Arts &Culture Department at events, functions, professional meetings and other public forums as directed.
Assists with library event programming and other services; assists with rentals and the set-up of auditorium and meeting rooms for special events.
Assists with facility maintenance functions, including creating and tracking Facility Service Requests as assigned.
Initiates inter library loans, conducts online material and information searches, and produces subject bibliographies and reading lists.
Maintains currency of professional knowledge by attending professional meetings and staff conferences. Keeps abreast of trends in public library practices, the arts, technology, and other related topics.
Participates in staff meetings and system-oriented planning sessions.
Maintains records and statistics, as well as prepares associated reports.
Tracks inventory of office supplies as assigned. Completes forms for ordering materials or supplies and follows up on delivery of ordered materials.
Directs clerical and part-time staff when the unit supervisor is absent.
May be called upon to drive a vehicle or travel on City business as necessary.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

Experience/Education
Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or a related field from an accredited college or university AND two years professional library experience and demonstrated knowledge and expertise through work experience or education in the visual arts OR a Bachelor’s Degree in the specialty field AND demonstrated knowledge and expertise through at least three years of work experience in the visual arts .
Master’s of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university is highly desirable.
Bilingual skills in Armenian, Spanish, Korean, or another language commonly spoken in the Glendale community is highly desirable.
