The Position
The City of Carlsbad, Library & Cultural Arts Department is currently seeking a Library Technician (Part Time) to join the Exploration HUB team. The HUB staff deliver programs and services in the library’s makerspace using 3D design software and printers, paper and vinyl design and cutting machines, and digital media conversion equipment.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for library makerspaces and a commitment to working as part of team dedicated to excellent customer service delivery. They will have experience working with patrons in a makerspace setting, be friendly, approachable and helpful, have knowledge of maker technology and/or digital conversion equipment, be able to work independently and communicate clearly.
The candidate will thrive with ongoing change, take initiative, be a constant self-educator, be forward thinking and appreciate the role that libraries serve in the community.
Candidates will have excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, an outstanding work ethic, and flexibility to work with new programs and services. Part time positions cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within one fiscal year. Part time employees with the City of Carlsbad receive 24 hours of sick leave per fiscal year. The scheduled work hours for Part Time Exploration Hub Technicians will vary and may be distributed over all hours that the Carlsbad City Libraries are open, including evenings and weekends.

The Department
The Library & Cultural Arts Department is supported by an annual budget of $13 million and 250 employees (114 full-time equivalent) working out of three main locations:
- Georgina Cole Library, near the historic downtown village, this location is home to an acclaimed genealogy program and local history collection
- Library Learning Center, an innovative, collaborative space providing life-changing literacy, bilingual services and library services
- Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, a modern space for learning and collaboration, including the Exploration HUB makerspace, a full-service auditorium and art gallery

Key Responsibilities
Library Technicians work cooperatively as part of a team to fulfill the mission of providing community members of all ages with convenient access to high-quality resources and services to inform and enrich individual and community life.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide exceptional customer service
- Collaborate with colleagues to plan and provide classes, workshops and programs
- Provide assistance and instruction to patrons on the use of Exploration Hub technology, tools and resources
In addition, Exploration Hub Technicians may:
- Keep track of makerspace inventory and supplies
- Conduct regular maintenance and basic repairs on Hub equipment
- Collect and analyze usage data
- Stay current on trends in community makerspaces
Qualifications
- Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
- Possess strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm, courteous and solutions-focused in all situations
- Ability to work cooperatively with the public and coworkers
- Compassionate when working with clientele with diverse backgrounds
- Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality
- Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment
- Proficient working with mobile devices and computers, including Microsoft Office programs Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Teams
- Passionate about libraries and/or makerspaces
Experience & Education
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would qualify.
- Previous experience working in a library makerspace setting is highly desirable
- Oral and written fluency in both English and Spanish is highly desirable (required for Library Technicians in Bilingual Services)
Physical Requirements
- Need to be able to operate equipment, including, but not limited to, some that may require rapid adjustments such as computer keyboards and terminals, printers and photocopiers
- Must be able to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing skilled movements such as rapid keyboard use
- Need to be able to perform frequent downward or upward flexion or turning of the neck, fine finger dexterity and grasp to manipulate the keyboard, telephone, writing instruments, papers, books, manuals and reports
- Job entails standing, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching at and above shoulders and twisting at the waist
- On a frequent basis, the incumbent must be able to squat or kneel
- Must be able to safely handle up to 40 pounds
- This position may require exposure to the outdoors
