Description
Position Summary:
The Life Skills Counselor provides traditional and non-traditional workforce training services to program participants and individuals recovering from various substance abuse disorders. Essential Job Functions include those listed below.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provides traditional and non-traditional workforce training services to program participants recovering from substance use disorders;
- Provides training on employment soft skills to program participants;
- Assists participants in resume writing and role-plays for job interviews;
- Provides and leads activities that build knowledge, coping skills, confidence, and an opportunity for program participants to connect with one another;
- Provides technical assistance as needed to carry out program activities, (such as streaming courses, video conferencing, etc.);
- Provides program participants with information regarding requirements for certifications and credentials;
- Utilizes a WestCare vehicle to provide transportation for program participants as needed;
- Assists in the gathering of data as needed for program evaluation;
- Ensures adherence to the operational services and financial plans of the program;
- Assists other WestCare staff as needed to promote cooperation and portray a professional image to the community;
- Embraces and embodies the mission, vision, guiding principles, clinical vision and goals of WestCare Foundation;
- Performs any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Certifications/Licensures:
- Relevant certification and/or licensure ispreferred; preference will be given to certified candidates;
- Valid drivers license and the ability to obtain and maintain WestCares vehicle insurance is required.
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college with a degree in Counseling, Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology or other field related to the position is preferred;
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience and Competencies:
- Two (2) years experience in workforce development, counseling, social work, or comparable field is required;
- Two (2) or more years working in a behavioral health environment is preferred;
- Ability to effectively coach and provide guidance is required;
- Experience working with individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health disorders preferred;
- Ability to form and maintain effective, professional, and positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and program participants required;
- Ability to work well, both individually and as part of a team required;
- Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion required;
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor required;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required;
Working Conditions:
- Work is primarily performed in an office or indoor setting;
- Occasional outdoor work and travel between multiple locations will be required;
- Regular and prompt attendance is required throughout employment.
