*THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION OF NO MORE THAN 20 HOURS IN A WORKWEEK.*
Monitor and control activities of swimmers; enforce swimming pool rules and regulations; rescue and administer first aid treatment to children and adults in distress; teach all levels of instructional swim programs; and perform other related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Supervision is provided by higher level Community Services personnel.
No supervision is exercised.
Essential Job Functions

Teach all levels of instructional swim program; patrol swimming pool areas, correct unsafe practices, assist swimmers in distress; enforce swimming pool rules and regulations regarding conduct of patrons; perform CPR and other first aid treatment as needed; assist in facility and swimming pool maintenance; may test and record chemical levels and program pool(s); may assist in recordkeeping and collection of fees; and perform related duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:
Education/Experience:
Equivalent to completion of the tenth grade. Minimum age of 16 at time of appointment and possession of a work permit. Some public contact experience is desired.
Knowledge of:
Water safety and lifesaving techniques; and techniques and methods of swim instruction.
Ability to:
Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations; instruct swimming and other aquatic activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and diversified population groups having varied needs and expectations; deal effectively and courteously with the public; think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of and ability to maintain the following certifications from the Red Cross or equivalent: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer (CPR-FPR); Community First Aid Safety (C-FAS); Bloodborne Pathogens (Title 22); and Lifeguard Training (LT). Possession of certification as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is highly desirable.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Applicants must complete an application online prior to the final filing date. Applications will be screened for qualifications, appropriate background, and only the most qualified will be invited to participate in the examination process. Successful candidates must achieve a minimum passing score in each of the test components. Applicants will be notified by e-mail as to the test date, time, and location. The examination process will include:
Performance Test – Pass/Fail
Oral interview – 100%
Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.

The City does not participate in the Social Security System. Part-time employees will be enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) and contribute 3.75% of their wages each pay period. The city will also contribute the equivalent of 3.75% to the employees PARS account. This position may receive 24 hours of sick time per year. The current vacancy offers varied work schedule and may require daytime, evenings and weekend hours.
