Definition
Under the general direction and supervision of the Pool Supervisor or designee, the lifeguard is responsible for supervising water activities in and around the swimming pool areas, ensuring safety regulations are met, rendering aid as required, and working at the front counter.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least eighteen years old; Lifeguard or National Pool and Water Park Lifeguard certification; and CPR and First Aid certificates. All certificates must be kept current. Recent experience in lifeguarding desirable. Basic cash handling and customer service skills desired.
Essential Functions
- Monitors activities in swimming area to prevent accidents and provides assistance to swimmers; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers lifesaving techniques.
- Maintains order in swimming area and cautions swimmers regarding unsafe activities.
- Works the front counter when not on the pool deck; duties include providing general information to patrons about NPRSA offerings, answering phones, and operating the POS system.
- Assists in custodial maintenance and clean-up operations in and around pool and adjacent facilities and does related work as assigned.
Other Functions:
- May determine chlorine and pH content of water by using testing kit; makes chemical adjustments as needed to maintain proper chemical balance.
- May be assigned in water duties during events / programs and Assist WSI’s during swim lessons as required by Pool Supervisor.
- May fill in as shift supervisor on a temporary basis in the absence of the Pool Supervisor or Pool Shift Supervisor
- Other related duties as assigned.

Administrative Leave
Administrative employees who are overtime exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act will receive up to 160 hours of administrative leave per year, as earned, to be used like annual leave.
Retirement
Enrollment in the State of Alaska Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) is mandatory. Employee/ Employer contributions dependent on PERS Tier Level employee is hired under.
