DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to perform a wide variety of repair, maintenance and construction work on buildings, parks, swim centers and their related apparatus; and to perform related work as required. A basic knowledge of the building trades and tools associated with it, is required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is an entry-level position. Maintenance and Construction Technicians I work individually or in crews assigned to perform maintenance, repair and construction work. They may work from plans and use a variety of power tools and equipment including saws and drills, mixers and compressors as well as hand tools. Incumbents in this class differ from those in the next higher class of Maintenance and Construction Technician II in that, for a majority of their work time, the former are assigned a full range of routine maintenance and construction functions that do not require advanced knowledge, skill or training in the crafts and trades.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Install, maintain, repair and trouble shoot automatically operated irrigation controls, timing devices, sprinkler heads, valves, and main and lateral line using plastic, galvanized and copper pipe; operate trenching equipment; install back flow devices.
  2. Install, maintain, inspect and repair electrical service lines for electrical equipment, service panels, electric lights, motors, heaters, generators, air conditioner units and other electrical apparatus; install and inspect lighting systems; replace fuses and lamps; operate electric lift; install and maintain telephone equipment.
  3. Install, maintain, inspect and repair standard plumbing equipment associated with water, gas, sewer and refrigeration systems; clean out drains and sewer lines using electric sewer machine.
  4. Perform skilled rough and finish carpentry work in the alteration, maintenance, restoration and repair of buildings and other related park equipment; construct and maintain a variety of standard and special play equipment; repair and maintain doors, windows, hinges, fences, furniture and other wooden articles; build partitions, shelves, cabinets, tables and counters; remove and install or repair roofing systems using wood or asphalt shingles; perform sheet metal and gutter repairs.
  5. Adjust, service and perform related installation of locking devices, door locks, automatic door closers, and panic hardware.
  6. Form, mix, pour and finish concrete for structural support purposes; perform masonry and ceramic tile work using tile and concrete saws; perform sheet rock work including taping and texturing.
  7. Perform arc, MIG, TIG and acetylene welding and assist in fabricating and installing metal gates, cages, doors, bollards and handrails.
  8. Prepare surfaces for paint by sanding, scraping, burning, washing; patch holes and cracks; apply paint including epoxy plastic and other finishes including varnishes, stains, lacquers and enamel to a variety of surfaces using brushes, rollers and spray equipment; erect scaffolding; use sand blasting equipment as needed.
  9. When regularly assigned to work at swim centers, services and maintains pumps, valves, filters and other swimming pool equipment; tests and regulates the chemical balance of the water; adds chemicals to tanks as needed; cleans tanks as needed; and performs custodial and landscape duties as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

Experience:

The equivalent of two years of full-time experience as a regularly appointed Park Caretaker or Golf Course Caretaker in the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District Service.

Or II

Experience:

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in the maintenance and construction field performing work in the building trades.

License: A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and a good driving record.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods, materials, tools, equipment and safety practices used in the construction and maintenance of buildings, park facilities and swim facilities.
  • May require knowledge of specialized pool equipment and chemicals necessary for pool maintenance.
  • Computer applications related to the work.

Ability to:

  • Work from sketches, drawings, blueprints, plans, specifications, oral instructions and manuals.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools to perform skilled trade and maintenance work in the areas of carpentry, plumbing, welding, electrical, painting and irrigation.
  • Complete basic records such as work orders, time sheets, requisitions, accident reports and vehicle inspection reports; perform demanding physical labor.
  • When regularly assigned at swim centers, must be able to swim.
