Maintenance & Operations: 8hr 52wk Grounds Maintenance

BASIC FUNCTION:

Perform skilled grounds equipment and systems activities and services involved in the inspection, repair, alterations, construction, installation and maintenance of grounds maintenance systems, equipment and devices .

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year grounds maintenance or related experience. Incumbents must possess knowledge of the standard equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in assigned field. Incumbents must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license, and may be required to work non-scheduled hours. The incumbent must obtain the National Playground Safety Inspector Certification within six (6) months of hire date.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Plant, cultivate, fertilize, aerate, re-seed and irrigate athletic turf grasses; re-grade areas of proper drainage as needed; grade and prepare ball diamonds for use.

2. Operate a variety of power-driven equipment including mowers, tractors, snow throwers, backhoes, slip seeders, aerators, straw spreader, skid loader, wood chippers, stump grinders, chainsaws, edgers, blowers, power rakes string trimmers and other equipment used in grounds work; utilize standard gardening and maintenance hand tools.

3. Participate in a variety of snow removal activities; clear entryways, walkways and other areas of snow; apply ice-melter as needed. Relocate snow as necessary with backhoe and skid steer.

4. Inspect, maintain and repair irrigation systems; clean, adjust and replace sprinkler heads; install, repair or replace pipes and various system parts and components such as drain lines, water mains and catch basins; dig holes and trenches as needed.

5. Perform major repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment such as tractors, mowers, equipment with small engines, trailers and other related equipment; engine rebuilds, hydraulic systems, electronics; transmissions, power systems and suspensions.

6. Perform minor installation and repair of concrete, asphalt; fencing and backstops, signs, bleachers, flagpoles and exterior rails.

7. Remove and relocate trees as assigned; operate bucket truck, backhoe, wood chipper and stump grinder.

8. Perform work from ladders, bucket trucks, and scaffolding as needed.

9. Support and assist custodial personnel in the training of the proper operation of grounds equipment

10. Audit, inspect and repair playground equipment and rubber fall safety surfacing utilizing National Playground Safety Inspector program guidelines and procedures; maintain records of audits, inspections, repairs, modifications and playground equipment manuals.

11. Transport and set up portable bleachers, manlifts and seasonal moves required for small engine/equipment maintenance; drives truck while pulling and backing a trailer; transport fuel to buildings.

12. Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.

The employee will be required to lift, carry, push or pull 50 pounds or more. Employee must be able to climb ladders and work from heights as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is seated or walking at will and has limited physical labor. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
