Maintenance & Operations: 8hr 52wk Grounds Supervisor

BASIC FUNCTION:

Supervise overall grounds operations to assure buildings and grounds are maintained in a clean, orderly and secure condition. Organize and direct grounds maintenance and gardening activities involved in the beautification of District grounds and landscaped areas. Coordinate personnel, communications and daily activities to meet grounds maintenance needs. Train and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and five years increasingly responsible grounds maintenance, or related experience including three years supervisory experience in the maintenance and care of buildings & facilities, including turf management. Must have strong supervisory, analytical, computer, organizational, and oral and written communication skills. Incumbents must possess knowledge of methods, terminology, procedures, materials, requirements, processes and equipment applicable to assigned field. Incumbents must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Supervise the mowing, edging, trimming and watering of lawns, fields and other turf grounds; assure proper preparation and fertilization of soil; organize and direct the planting, cultivation, pruning, fertilization and irrigation of flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; assure assigned functions comply with established standards, policies and procedures.

2. Coordinate personnel, communications and daily activities to meet custodial and grounds maintenance needs; monitor and adjust activities in response to custodial and grounds maintenance needs.

3. Train and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel; interview and select employees and recommend transfers, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions; coordinate employee work assignments and review work to assure compliance with established standards and procedures.

4. Develop and implement grounds maintenance projects and daily activities; inspect completed projects for accuracy, completeness and compliance with established requirements.

5. Organize, direct and participate in maintaining vehicles and maintenance equipment in safe operating condition as directed; perform maintenance and repairs on equipment as needed; arrange for major maintenance and repairs as needed.

6. Develop and implement irrigation schedules; supervise the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems; direct and participate in the installation, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems and related parts, components and equipment.

7. Inspect facilities to identify grounds maintenance needs; assure proper identification and resolution of safety, sanitary and security hazards; coordinate response to emergency custodial and grounds maintenance needs.

8. Estimate labor, materials and equipment needed for grounds maintenance activities; monitor and assure adequate inventory levels of equipment and supplies; research and coordinate the purchase of equipment and supplies as appropriate.

9. Coordinate and arrange grounds maintenance and equipment maintenance projects with outside contractors as needed; prepare related specifications; inspect work of outside contractors to assure compliance with established requirements and specifications.

10. Operate a variety of power-driven equipment and hand and power tools in grounds and custodial work; drive a vehicle to conduct work.

11. Assist in the acquisition, management and control of District properties; monitor and assess property needs; prepare various property records and files.

12. Organize, direct and participate in the application of pesticides and other pest control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures.

13. Participate in the removal and disposal of hazardous materials according to established laws and regulations.

14. Assist in the development and implementation of employee training programs to enhance the cleaning and maintenance of District buildings and grounds.

15. Utilize standard office equipment including a computer and assigned software.

16. Prepare, distribute and respond to a variety of correspondence; maintain various records and files related to personnel, daily activities, SDS, District properties, acreage, and assigned functions.

17. Perform work from ladders and scaffolding as needed.

18. Attend and participate in various meetings as assigned.

19. Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.

The employee will perform assigned duties which require bending, kneeling, twisting, and reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally. The employee will be required to lift, carry, push or pull moderately heavy objects. Employee must be able to climb ladders and work from heights as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is seated or walking at will and has limited physical labor. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
