Maintenance & Operations: 8hr 52wk Mechanic

BASIC FUNCTION:

Perform a variety of skilled mechanical activities in the inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of non-Transportation Department FWCS vehicles, and grounds maintenance equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school, completion of an approved Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification program specializing in automotive repair and maintenance supplemented by three years’ experience in automotive maintenance and repair. The employee must have computer, oral and written communication skills. Incumbents must possess knowledge of the technical aspects, methods, materials, terminology, principles, practices, procedures and equipment used in assigned field. Incumbents must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license, and may be required to work non-scheduled hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair vehicle problems and malfunctions; repair or replace parts and components as needed; perform preventive maintenance on vehicles; assure safe and proper operating condition of vehicles and power-driven equipment.

2. Diagnose, repair or replace vehicle transmissions; repair, adjust or replace various components such as batteries, starters, alternators, radiators, hoses, belts, bearings, gears, differentials, distributors, pumps, axles and other parts and devices.

3. Adjust, repair and maintain brake systems; install and replace brakes, pads, rotors and other hardware; perform transmission, motor and engine inspections, overhauls, maintenance and repairs; perform minor and major tune-ups on District vehicles.

4. Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as air tools, jacks, testers, meters, lifts and various hand and power tools; utilize a computer to retrieve information and prepare work orders and other documents; drive a vehicle to conduct work.

5. Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and perform preventive maintenance on mowers, tractors and various other grounds maintenance equipment; repair small engines on power-driven equipment.

6. Service vehicles and equipment with fuel, oil, grease, water and hydraulic fluids; service Oil filters; assure proper fluid levels; replace fuses; assure proper air levels of tires and fill as needed; replace, rotate and balance tires; repair and patch flats. Maintain a Preventive Maintenance Program for M&O vehicles which will include an ongoing maintenance record for each vehicle.

7. Plan, organize and lay out assigned tasks; interpret diagrams, sketches, schematics, technical manuals and specifications; work from verbal and written instructions and work orders; estimate labor, material and equipment needed for assigned projects.

8. Monitor and maintain adequate inventory levels of materials and equipment; order and receive materials and equipment as needed.

9. Maintain various records related to maintenance, repairs and assigned activities.

10. Work in an environment exposed to dust, dirt, grease, oil and other potential contaminants.

11. Lift and carry heaving automotive parts and equipment.

12. Maintain shop and work areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

13. Respond to service and emergency road calls and perform related field work as directed.

14. Participate in a variety of snow removal activities; clear entryways, walkways, and other areas of snow; apply ice-melter as needed.

15. Support and assist custodial personnel in the training of the proper operation of generators and grounds maintenance equipment.

16. Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. The employee is required to have dexterity of hands and fingers. The employee is required to walk or stand for extended periods of time. The employee will perform assigned duties which require bending, kneeling, twisting, and reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally. The employee will be required to lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing 50 pounds or more. Employee must be able to climb ladders and work from heights as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is seated or walking at will and has limited physical labor. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
