Job Description
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, work to maintain and operate the Parks and Recreation facilities and equipment with emphasis on the pool facilities. Weekend and shift work may be required.
Examples of Duties
• Maintain, repair and troubleshoot existing mechanical control systems and their components.
• Perform tasks involving plumbing, building and carpentry, mechanics and other maintenance activities related to Parks and Recreation facilities.
• Maintain maintenance logs on all equipment, keep routine schedule for a preventative maintenance management system relating to Parks and Recreation facilities.
• Respond to emergency calls relating to Parks and Recreation facilities’ maintenance and operation.
• Use hand and power tools such as saws, drills, hammers and snow blowers, jack hammers, pumps, brush cutters, generators, compressors, welders, mowers, 4-wheelers and various other equipment when required to perform a task.
• Operate a variety of heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, forklifts, flatbed trucks, utility trucks, and similar motorized equipment.
• Lead temporary personnel and volunteers in maintenance activities as assigned.
• Assist in developing Parks and Recreation facilities when required; including performing snow/ice removal and control operations using snow/ice removal and control equipment and materials from walkways, entrances and other areas as directed; and maintenance related to Parks and Recreation facilities, including, but not limited to collecting samples for laboratory work, cleaning and repairing equipment.
• Repair various fitness equipment, including treadmills, weight machines, etc.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of general maintenance skills including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical; heating and cooling systems; and ventilation systems.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical maintenance problems and make estimates of material and repair parts requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of pool water treatment system.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures including all safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to perform all assigned manual labor tasks, both skilled and unskilled, under rigorous conditions.
  • Physical stamina and endurance.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Willingness to perform various job-related duties as situations require, a strong sense of teamwork, and the ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.
  • Ability to coordinate maintenance tasks, compile data and process forms and information.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and lifting and carrying items and boxes up to 70 pounds. Administer CPR and first aid as, as needed.

Frequent outdoor work and exposure to inclement weather and rigorous conditions. Crawling, bending, stooping in confined areas. Shoveling or sweeping snow, and or dirt from walkways. Sweeping and picking up litter. Lifting, holding, carrying and using various tools and equipment.
Requirements
LICENSES:

Valid State of Alaska driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the Borough’s insurance carrier. The following licenses/certificates must be current or obtained within 6 months of employment:

  • CPO: Certified Pool Operators License

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Previous maintenance experience with swimming pools, and facilities, preferred.

Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
