Maintenance Technician – Special Operations

Job Description

Incumbents provide semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance based on assignment to any City department or maintenance function. Work may include repairing and maintaining buildings and/or grounds; performing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and parts; operating assigned equipment, typically of a smaller variety involved in grounds maintenance such as mowers, blowers, weed-eaters; maintaining cleanliness of work area, tools and equipment; and following safety policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operating various tools and equipment associated with landscape maintenance.
  • Operating dump truck to haul employees, tools, and supplies to job sites.
  • Assisting with graffiti removal; cleaning debris from streets and dead ends; assisting with nuisance abatement crews in landscaping and removing debris from properties.
  • Operating dump truck with leaf machine attachment during leaf collection season.
  • Operating dump truck with snow removal equipment during inclement weather.
  • Other street maintenance related duties may be assigned.
  • Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather.

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience related to assignment.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or ability to obtain within 45 days of hire.

ADA and Other Requirements
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
