The Ideal Candidate: The current vacancy is in the Trees and Landscape Division of the Public Works Department. In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications for this position, the ideal candidate will be well versed in the care and maintenance of trees, and will possess the following skills:
*The ability to rig and climb trees to remove tree limbs safely
*The ability to operate a variety of equipment to remove trees
*The ability to inspect newly planted trees, and spot defects and disease before problems begin
*The ability to lead and coordinate large groups of employees to get the job done
*Hold a current Qualified Applicant License with Category B mandatory and Category F desired
This is the advanced journey level class in the maintenance worker class series. The Maintenance Worker Ill is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series by the responsibility assumed by leading a crew and by the performance of the more complex and responsible duties assigned to positions in this series. Incumbents at this level typically possess specialized skills, knowledge and abilities, and work independently.
Examples of Duties
- Serve as lead worker over an assigned crew in the areas of either street, utility, parks, street landscape maintenance, recreation, and/or facilities.
- Provide guidance and training to less experienced personnel.
- Assist assigned supervisor with daily supervision of personnel and the timely completion of assigned duties.
- Check work of assigned crew.
- Maintain timesheets and other records as appropriate.
- Ensure that safety measures and practices are utilized at all times.
- Oversee and participate in the performance of maintenance duties; heavy manual labor, operate construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, sweepers, highranger, and skip loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving the maintenance of either streets, recreation, facilities, utilities, parks, and/or street landscape.
- Perform emergency maintenance work as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
When assigned to parks, trees and street landscape:
- Prune, mulch and provide weed control for public landscaping in medians, along sound walls and trails;
- Water, mow and trim lawns;
- Inspect city street trees for health and structural integrity, prune, plant, and treat city trees for pests and disease;
- Provide roadside and ditch weed control;
- Install, monitor and repair irrigation systems;
- Apply chemicals and fertilizers.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- City policies and procedures related to maintenance.

- Operating mechanical equipment for the use of the construction and maintenance of public facilities in the areas of streets, utilities, parks, landscape, recreation, and facility maintenance.
- Procedures and techniques relative to assigned area of responsibility.
- Purpose and use of variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
- The application of pesticides.
- Organize and oversee the work of a crew.
- Provide training and guidance to less experienced personnel.
- Maintain neat and accurate records.
- Work without supervision; exercise sound independent judgments.
- Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work, in assigned area of responsibility.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of public facilities including the areas of streets, utilities, parks, street landscape maintenance, facilities, and/or recreation, comparable to that of the Maintenance Worker Il in the City of Milpitas.
Education:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License or Certificate:
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid California
- Commercial Driver’s License with Class B and tanker endorsement within 1 1 months of appointment.
NOTE: This vacancy requires the possession of a QAL with a Certificate B
Other Requirements:
- Visual Requirements: Discern colors
- Auditory Requirements: 100-decibel hearing
Physical exam, and drug and alcohol screening. Work is mainly performed outdoors; ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, squat, kneel, crawl, bend, and stoop at any given time; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds of weight throughout the day and occasionally up to 90 pounds; exposure to outdoor elements in all weather conditions throughout the year, confined spaces, hazardous waste, sewage, chemicals, herbicides and pesticides; ability to walk on uneven surfaces; ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.
Supplemental Information
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Receives general supervision from assigned Senior Public Works Lead, Maintenance Supervisor or Public Works Manager.
- Exercises indirect supervision over assigned maintenance personnel.

RETIREMENT
Membership in CalPERS (2% at 60 or 2% at 62 with three year average salary). City of Milpitas employees do not participate in Social Security, but do contribute to Medicare. Additionally, members pay $2.40/per hour to the LIUNA pension fund.
MEDICAL INSURANCE
Choice of CalPERS Medical Plans. City pays coverage up to the Kaiser rate (currently $2,228.36/mo. for family). Employees who waive health coverage are eligible to receive $125 per month in lieu of medical plan coverage with proof of other coverage.
RETIREE MEDICAL
Employees are eligible upon CalPERS retirement from the City to receive up to 100% retiree medical coverage (currently based on the Kaiser health rate), based on years of service.
DENTAL & VISION
City provides full family coverage for Delta Dental and MES Vision at no cost to the employee.
LIFE INSURANCE
City provides $50,000 term policy. Supplemental employee-paid life insurance is available up to $500,000, based on carrier acceptance.
DISABILITY INSURANCE
City provides a Short-Term Disability plan similar to State Disability Insurance (SDI) coverage. Employees do not participate in SDI. Long-Term Disability coverage of 60% of base salary up to $1,500 per month is available after a 60-day waiting period. Additional buy-up options for LTD are available up to $6,000 per month.
VACATION
Hourly employees earn 11-31 days of vacation per year based on years of service.
HOLIDAYS
Employees receive 12 paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday per year.
SICK LEAVE
Employees earn 12 days annually.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Employees are eligible to receive up to $1,400 per fiscal year in tuition reimbursement.
