Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking a Maintenance Worker/Senior Maintenance Worker for the Parks, Recreation & Culture Division. This position will be responsible for semi-skilled manual labor to cleaning brush from roadside, lining ballfields, sweeping walks, cleaning restrooms, removing refuse and paper from grounds, as well as, cutting, trimming, watering, and fertilizing lawn and bushes, clean and sanitizes restrooms, pavilions and park facilities. The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have at least one (1) year of experience in maintaining a park, operating commercial lawn maintenance equipment, and facility maintenance experience.

Illustrative Duties

  • Performs all duties assigned of Park Maintenance Worker
  • Operates commercial landscape equipment including, but not limited to mowers, blowers, brush cutters, chain saws, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers in parks.
  • Operates various types of construction equipment including but not limited to dump trucks, mid-size tractors with attachments, skid steer loaders, ATV’s, generators, reciprocating saws, circular saws and various air power tools.
  • Assists repair technicians and journeymen in duties. Assists in performing field maintenance and service work on equipment operated.
  • Operates vehicle-mounted and portable spray equipment.
  • Assists with application, storage, mixing and loading of herbicides for vegetation control.
  • Performs work such as event set up and teardown including event-specific equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic tools used in maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to laboring work.
  • Clears brush and debris from Parks. Sweeps walks. Removes refuse and paper from grounds. Cuts, trims, waters trees & landscape materials.
  • Loads and unloads heavy material from trucks and vans. Moves and aids in moving materials and equipment and/or large and bulky objects.
  • Performs scheduled housekeeping duties throughout the facility and area grounds. May be required to move furniture.
  • Performs minor repairs under close supervision such as changing lights and unstopping toilets.
  • Washes and cleans vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Keeps restrooms and locker rooms supplied with necessary papers, soaps, and towels.
  • Cleans and sanitizes park restrooms, shower areas, pavilions, and playgrounds.
  • Maintains biking, hiking, and equestrian trails.
  • Picks up and delivers parts and supplies as directed.
  • May serve as a lead worker on a small work crew.
  • May be assigned to other locations based upon operational needs.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Assists with ballfield maintenance, prepares fields for daily use.
  • Cleans and prepares pavilions, ball fields and buildings for rentals.
  • Mows, trims & edges turf and maintains landscapes and park fixtures and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Maintenance Worker Requirements:
High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience in construction and/or general maintenance work. The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have at least one (1) year of experience in maintaining a park, operating commercial lawn maintenance equipment and facility maintenance experience.
A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the required experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Pay rate: $15.00

Senior Maintenance Worker Requirements:
High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Worker or two (2) years of experience in construction and/or general maintenance work. The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have at least one (1) year of experience in maintaining a park, operating commercial lawn maintenance equipment and facility maintenance experience.
A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the required experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required for project crew positions only.
Pay rate: 16.00

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • All knowledge, skills, and abilities of a Maintenance Worker.
  • Ability to perform routine unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual work.
  • Knowledge of basic tools used in maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to laboring work.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial landscape equipment including, but not limited to mowers, chain saws, blowers, brush cutters, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers in parks without assistance.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to fill out daily worksheets.
  • Ability to safely operate pick-up truck and small trailer and safely secure loads.
  • Ability to safely tow and back a trailer.
  • Ability to safely operated mid-size tractors w/attachments powered lifts (elevated platforms)
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Demands: Ability to see, talk, and hear. Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and machines. Peripheral vision. Ability to pull, push, lift, carry 50 lbs, grasp, handle, climb, balance, reach overhead, bend, stoop. Ability to traverse uneven, wet or broken terrain.

Environmental Demands: Inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including but not limited to heat, humidity, wind and cold. May require exposure to chemicals, dust, insects, noise, fumes, and confined spaces.

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend safety instructions, procedures, floor plans, memos, and directions. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information. Ability to perform basic math such as addition and subtraction.
