BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for on-site leadership of day-to-day grounds maintenance operations ensuring district grounds are safe, neat, and attractive.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- Clear and valid Texas driver’s license
- Four years of grounds maintenance work including at least one year in a supervisor/manager capacity preferred.
Experience:
- Three years experience in gardening and landscape maintenance
- Three years supervisory experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of gardening and landscape maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret landscape plans
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations
- Ability to direct and supervise personnel
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Methods, materials, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment used in various grounds maintenance activities including mowing, edging, trimming, and weed and pest control.
- Plants, trees and ground cover materials.
- Principles and practices of supervision and training.
- Health and safety regulations related power equipment and toxic chemical applications.
- Operation of a forklift and other assigned equipment.
- Supervise the work of others and recommend work methods
- Perform skilled grounds maintenance and repair work.
- Maintain and repair sprinklers and watering systems.
- Explain safe work practices, methods and procedures.
- Operate and demonstrate the use of equipment and power and hand tools.
- Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
- Ability to build teams and maintain a positive work environment.

Grounds Maintenance and Landscaping
- Plan, assign and review work activities of assigned grounds maintenance crews and personnel; train grounds personnel in proper techniques and procedures in the use of tools, equipment and chemical applications.
- Organize spraying, mowing, pruning; inspect work in progress and upon completion for quality, accuracy and timeliness; supervise and evaluate assigned personnel; provide feedback and discipline as needed.
- Oversee operation of power equipment; verify equipment is in safe and proper operating condition; assist in completing grounds maintenance work as needed.
- Assist in reviewing work order requests and recommend proper methods, tools, equipment and personnel for completing jobs.
- Supervise crews and oversee skilled work in planting, fertilizing, pruning, spraying and maintaining shrubs, trees and landscaped areas; coordinate and participate in pesticide applications, planting and fertilizing activities.
- Advise irrigation personnel in planning, installing and repairing automatic sprinkler systems.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of records related to personnel, time records, work orders, equipment operation and repair, sprinkler timers and site inspections.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervise Groundskeeper and Lead Groundskeeper positions
SAFETY
- Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
- Help keep vehicle, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
- Inspect and adjust tools and equipment for safety and efficiency and perform preventive maintenance as needed.
- Follow safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Provide training and orientation to all ground’s personnel in safety procedures and proper and safe use of tools and equipment.
OTHER
- Transport workers and equipment to work sites.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Garden tools; small hand tools; power tools; heavy equipment including backhoe, tractor, grader; and power mower; light truck or van
Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
