JOB DESCRIPTION: The Manager of Hockey Communications will take a lead role in advancing coverage of the LA Kings team and executing internal and external requests for players and staff. In addition to working all home games and supporting activity related to road games, this person will represent the LA Kings organization on select road trips and events. This role will require a strong writer with excellent hockey knowledge who can author press releases and manage the department’s digital platforms in an effective manner. This individual must also possess strong organizational skills and be able to communicate with the appropriate demeanor, including in our digital spaces when leading Zoom calls with media and creating and distributing content posted on the @LAKingsPR account. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serves in a primary role with handling traditional media requests for players and coaches daily and will travel with the team on select trips
- Contributes to the idea generation and strategy for all of the department’s media activity pertaining to hockey operations
- Oversees the relationship with external podcasts and other digital platforms as it relates to pitching and fulfilling guest requests for players, coaches and hockey operations staff
- Fulfills internal requests for players, coaches, and hockey operations staff from other departments (as assigned by Director of Hockey Communications) for content creation or appearances, such as social media, digital content, marketing, game presentation, sponsorship, and community relations
- Manages all department digital platforms and documents, including @LAKingsPR X account, the department’s website, Prospect Reports, and other digital materials
- Lead writer for all hockey-related press releases including all daily transaction announcements, award submissions and other written materials and information for public distribution.
- Hosts and directs all Zoom press conferences and manages the Dropbox account that contains all interviews
- Serves as a liaison with the event manager for Crypto.com Arena related to game days
- Organizes player interaction for meet and greets after warmups and post-game as needed with ticketing, community relations and other departments
- Supports the department at select internal events and serves as the lead with PR and digital media strategy at certain events as directed, including a yearly rotation of NHL events including the Draft, All-Star Weekend, Media Tour, and more.
- Oversees the development and enhancement of a new press release distribution system
- Produce team statistical information and game notes by working with the Hockey Operations staff and National Hockey League for Media and Club use as required by the NHL; create and maintain statistical information website for media purposes
SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
- Must have excellent written and editing abilities with an education or background in this area, including familiarity with hockey vernacular and an understanding of AP style
- Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and frequent change, delays or unexpected events
- Proven ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information
- Ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); ability to learn required business systems
- Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external partners
- Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamless with excellent attention to detail
- Solid understanding of communications strategies necessary including emerging technologies and social/non-traditional media
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Well versed with all social media platforms and capable of running the @LAKingsPR “X” account
- Fluent with InDesign, Photoshop and PowerPoint in particular, including an introductory level with design capabilities for info graphics and statistical charts
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS: Education:
- BA/BS Degree (4-year) Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a related area
Experience:
- 4-6 years Related work experience
- Experience with multiple virtual communications platforms and capability of organizing and leading Zoom calls with expertise and managing of Dropbox, Google Drive, Share Point and more
Pay Scale: $77,000 – $85,000 AEG reserves the right to change or modify the employee’s job description whether orally or in writing, at any time during the employment relationship. AEG may require an employee to perform duties outside his/her normal description.
