Manager, People & Culture
POSITION SUMMARY: At Seattle Humane, our approach to Human Resources Management is rooted in our people and our culture. The Manager, People & Culture is a critical leader in the organization, a trusted advisor, responsible for overseeing and managing HR operations, employee leave and benefit programs, employee relations, coaching, counseling, leadership development, and supervising 1-3 department staff plus volunteers. The manager consistently demonstrates empathy equally with the ability to maintain and enhance shelter culture. Position is on-site 3-5 days a week. Reports directly to Chief People & Culture Officer (CPCO).
KEY OR ESSENTIAL AREAS AND FUNCTIONS:
- Leads and develops People & Culture team members including People & Culture Specialist.
- Demonstrates and ensures high standards of mission driven, customer service-oriented process management and program delivery reflected in Seattle Humane’s success.
- Develops and maintains meaningful, professional relationships with management ensuring thorough execution of effective HR processes with consistent guidance, and support.
- Manages end to end recruiting and hiring activities with support from Specialist.
- Investigates, resolves, and coaches management on employee relations matters, conflicts, safety incidents and guidance through disciplinary procedures.
- Responsible for effective HR operations including HRIS and managing confidential records.
- Consistently develops, adapts, and applies knowledge of shelter job duties, the work environment, and staff wellness in alignment with our mission and values.
- Monitors departmental budget and participates in annual budgeting process.
- Trains, develops, and partners with management, including the executive team, to ensure consistent performance management practices and annual performance review program.
- Partners with CPCO to develop, design, and facilitate leadership, professional, and cultural training programs including Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging.
- Partners with the CPCO to manage compensation programs.
- Responsible for developing content and managing on-going staff communications.
- Develops and delivers reporting on Metrics and Key Performance Indicators.
- Provide consultation for effectiveness of department specific training programs.
- Develops, maintains, diversified partnerships within the animal welfare and HR communities.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, or a related field. Relevant experience considered in lieu of a degree.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- 4-5 years of experience and progression in Human Resources generalist and manager roles.
- 3-5 years of experience in full-cycle recruitment and on-boarding.
- 2-3 years of experience leading, influencing and developing all levels of leadership and HR staff.
- Proven, cross functional, project management skills in small or large organizations.
- Proven competence in designing and executing leadership training and development programs.
- Ability to collect and analyze data to interpret organizational progress, results and inform decision making.
- Ability to work in animal welfare, understanding challenges and working effectively with empathy.
- Effective written and verbal communication, including presentation and facilitation skills.
- Exercises good judgement and decision-making skills.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Previous experience working in high volume animal welfare or social services environments.
- Previous experience working with nonprofit organizations, in any capacity (volunteer, staff, board member)
- Previous experience developing and supporting Diversity, Equity, Belonging and Inclusion programs and practices.
- SHRM-CP or PHR certificate or in progress.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
General office environment with the option to perform some of the work remotely. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from vertebrate animals to people), animal dander and noise.
- Chemical Interaction: A wide variety of cleaners, disinfectants, detergents and medical products are used daily. Each position at Seattle Humane will encounter these chemicals during the routine performance of their duties. Specific instructions will be provided by a staff member for the safe and proper use of these chemicals. If there are any questions regarding this information, copies of our chemical MSDS sheets are available for review. If asked to use a product that is unfamiliar, contact your supervisor for proper instructions.
- Work Hours: Normal business working hours, 40 hours a week flexible schedule with occasional evening or weekend hours for meetings or events. Remote work possible 1-2 days a week after mutual confidence and competence in performance and results.
