JOB DESCRIPTION
Assists Special Programs Manager and Program Coordinators with the daily tasks and initiatives of multiple animal-related programs. Helps a group of coordinators to develop, implement, and organize programs that help serve the animal population at the shelter. Conducts daily tasks and initiatives for the programs. This intern will work closely with the community.
Applicants should have a strong interest in community affairs, event coordination, and volunteerism and be willing to work in a fast-paced environment and be interested in helping the underserved population and their pets. Work is primarily evenings Tuesday through Saturday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule.
Applicants must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a Bachelor OR Graduate program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Promotes, and assists with programs to support Animal Services’ adoptable animals.
• Assists in the planning, implementation, statistical tracking, and reporting of the programs related to shelter and adoption awareness programs.
• Seeks out relevant trainings throughout the communities in regard to responsible pet ownership and assists with speaking events and a variety of trainings held throughout the year.
• Assists with events, volunteers, adoptions/donations, and special division functions.
• Assists in the development, maintenance, and expansion of partnerships with business groups and local businesses, such as libraries, public housing complexes, community centers, churches, internal departments, and other outside organizations.
• Assists in the coordination and staffing of events, volunteers, and special division functions.
• Assists with presentations at various meetings and forums for civic, school, or local groups.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)
Knowledge of:
• Principles, practices, and methods of creating and managing events
• Basic principles and procedures of record-keeping
• Preparing and maintaining accurate and complete records and files
• Computer applications
• Animal breeds and temperaments, as well as animal-person compatibility
• Handling techniques, restraint and confinement, and the occupational hazards and safety precautions of working with animals
Skills and Abilities to:
• Perform duties in a manner which encourages contributions and business for Animal Services
• Research different marketing, outreach, and promotional concepts in use by other national and regional animal welfare organizations
• Comfortably speak before groups of people
• Work in a fast-paced work environment, embrace and foster change, problem solve and multi-task
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, volunteers, and staff
• Be self-sufficient and work with an attention to detail
• Handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment
• Work independently
PAY: $15.00/hour
START DATE: The internship begins May 15, 2023, through July 31, 2023

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires climbing, running, twisting, and bending. Interns are frequently exposed to loud noises, unpleasant odors, cleaning agents, pet dander, zoonotic diseases, and dangerous animals that may bite, kick, or scratch. Interns may lift, carry, push, and pull loads of 20-40 pounds on an intermittent basis and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION
The ability to travel to off-site facilities for training and special events as needed is required. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed and in emergency situations.

An “At Will”, FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.
