What you’ll do: The primary focus will be to manage the Benefits Unit – Eastern Region, which currently consists of six attorneys and three clerical, and conduct administrative hearings for public assistance applicants and recipients as mandated by federal law. This position will be responsible for his/her own hearing load, and for supervising the work of 6 full-time hearing officers and 3 full-time clerical. The Managing Attorney acts as liaison between the Benefits Unit – Eastern Region, Family Support Division and the Attorney General’s office. The Managing Attorney will also closely interact with the public. Additional duties include:
• Report to the Chief of Administrative Hearings Section and the General Counsel of the Department of Social Services;
• Closely track and monitor appeals of the Benefits Unit – Eastern Region decisions in circuit or appellate courts.
• Ensure that administrative hearings are provided fairly, accurately, timely, and in accordance with law;
• Assist the Chief of Administrative Hearings in overall program direction, articulation of policies and procedures, establish priorities, and administer the hearing process of the Benefits Unit – Eastern Region ;
• Assist the Chief of Administrative Hearings in collecting and maintaining accurate performance and outcome measures for the Benefits Unit – Eastern Region;
• Other duties as assigned.
All you need for success:
Minimum Qualifications: Licensed attorney in the State of Missouri. Five or more years practicing law.
Pursuant to State Law, this position requires accreditation, licensure, and/or professional or occupational license which is only available to holders of specific post-secondary degrees.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of and experience with administrative law, public interest law, and public benefits law. Two or more years of managerial experience is preferred.
