Position Overview
The Managing Director of Knowledge & Learning (K&L) is an essential leader within our regional academic team. The person in this role is responsible for the leadership of the network’s flagship teacher development and school leader development programs. Teacher development programs include: the Capital Teaching Residency (CTR), New Teacher Launch, the Fellowship in Special Education and the newly launched teacher leadership initiative. Leadership development programs include the New Deans and Coaches Cohort, Rising Leaders for new Vice-Principals and the Principal-in-Residence program. The Managing Director of Knowledge & Learning is responsible for launching new programs to create a robust school-based talent development continuum, setting vision for the team and how the programs work together, collaborating with regional leaders outside of the team for investment and input and directly managing the Senior Director(s) and Director(s) across the Knowledge & Learning team.
In addition to the responsibilities overseeing the Knowledge and Learning team, the person in this role supports the collaboration and coherence of KIPP DC’s regional academic staff development program, including the execution of regional summer professional developments and periodic special regional programming throughout the year. In this role, the Managing Director of Knowledge and Learning works collaboratively with other senior leaders across the academic team as well as the team of deputy chiefs of schools.
The person in this role also provides thought partnership across functional teams such as the Talent and DEI teams, etc. and cultivates and maintains strong relationships with external partners to drive our talent development and professional learning goals.
The Managing Director of Knowledge & Learning role is an exempt position and will report to the Chief Academic Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team & Program Management (65%)
- Directly manage Knowledge & Learning team senior director(s) and director(s) who run the following programs along the continuum of school-based roles:
- Capital Teaching Residency: one year residency program for aspiring general educators which involves certification coursework, graded assignments and ongoing coaching and feedback
- Fellowship in Special Education: one year certification program for aspiring special educators; serves KIPP DC and educators across the city as a revenue generating tuition-based program; includes certification coursework, graded assignments and ongoing coaching and feedback
- New Teacher Launch: small group school-based professional learning communities to support the practice and well-being of new to KIPP DC and novice teachers in early childhood and elementary schools
- Teacher Leadership: network-wide coherence, structures and programs for teacher leaders
- New Dean and Coach Cohort: one year professional development community for individuals new to the dean and coach roles across KIPP DC schools
- Rising Leaders: one year professional development community for individuals new to the vice-principal roles across KIPP DC; includes professional development, one-on-one leadership coaching and application projects
- Principals-in-Residence: one to two year training experience for aspiring KIPP DC principals; includes application projects, leadership coaching and readiness assessments
- Recruit, select, onboard develop, and manage the Knowledge & Learning team’s 12 team members
- Cultivate a team culture that is aligned with the vision for the team’s goals and in keeping with KIPP DC’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity
- Create and deliver on a professional development or coaching plans for all members of the team to support their competencies, skills, and agreed upon growth goals
- Develop and monitor the Knowledge & Learning team’s fiscal budget aligned to team goals and in accordance with KIPP DC’s policies
- Evaluate the quality of the Knowledge & Learning team programs; initiate necessary adjustments and/or provide feedback and support to program leaders to drive actionable improvements; ensure coordination, connections and alignment between programs
- Monitor and analyze metrics important to the Knowledge & Learning team goals and outcomes (i.e. successful program completion, retention, diversity and representation, etc) to drive improved performance and program quality
- Pursue and oversee external partnerships critical to KIPP DC’s talent development programs and ambition, including but not limited to KIPP Foundation, university, and potential grantors or funders
- Communicate regular updates with internal and external stakeholders about program offerings; report out on the performance of Knowledge & Learning programs; champion the Knowledge & Learning team’s success and continue to address improvements where needed
- Identify areas for potential new programs and initiatives in partnership with other senior leaders and team members, conduct research and initiate their launch
- Directly manage Knowledge & Learning team senior director(s) and director(s) who run the following programs along the continuum of school-based roles:
- Leadership, Collaboration, and Coordination Across Academic Team and Cross-Functional Teams (35%)
- Collaborate closely with fellow senior leaders to ensure the Knowledge & Learning program complements, supports, and drives programming in concert with other team members priorities and workstreams
- Provide senior-level thought partnership and collaboration to colleagues in areas of talent development (i.e. coaching methodology, competency development, etc)
- Facilitate the design, prioritization, and execution of specific academic team regional PD initiatives (i.e. summer PD, development & wellness days, etc); lead development or facilitate PD for colleagues or stakeholder groups
- Support the design, revision, and roll out of competencies aligned to academic roles (i.e. leaders, teachers, etc.)
- Guide and assists the talent team in the recruitment and hiring process, staffing allocations, and fiscal management for participants in Knowledge & Learning programs (i.e residents, Sped Fellows, etc)
- Support additional projects across the academic and non-academic team, such as participating in the rising leader selection process, supporting the planning for non-academic/HDQ professional development, designing & delivering PD for school leaders, etc.
- Cultivate, evaluate, and operationalize short term and long term initiatives that advance the development of KIPP DC’s talent and our talent goals including coordinating collaborative efforts in the design and implementation of school leader selection and an annual talent review process for school leaders
Qualifications
Requirements
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in education or similar field is preferred
- 10+ years of leadership experience in an educational leadership role preferred; at least 5-7 years experience in the field of adult professional learning or talent development
- Experience and deep understanding of the workings of schools and classrooms
- Coaching and mentoring skills are required
- Experience managing through multiple leadership layers/teams required
- Experience managing budgets and staffing models required
- Strong project management and problem solving capabilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Data analysis and management capabilities required
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams across the organization
- Strong content knowledge in professional learning and development for adult learners
- Demonstrates integrity, both in words and actions, and encourages ethical behavior and decision making

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:
- The anticipated starting salary for this position is $123,246-$152,245. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.
- KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
- KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
- Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
- As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support, and this position will regularly provide on-site support to school teams, frequently partner with other headquarters teams, or regularly work in multiple locations. Because of the nature of the work, this role allows for occasional flexibility. This role will have approximately 20% flexibility to work remotely.
