Department Overview
The people of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E’s electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration, and emergency response.
As a critical member of Electric Operations, the Electric GIS/Mapping organization is responsible for maintaining and updating the maps and data necessary to safely operate our electric grid.
PG&E’s enterprise production GIS systems are based on ESRI technology integrated with SAP and Oracle. The electric mapping organization records and maintains information for over 141,000 miles of underground and overhead electric distribution lines and over 5,500 miles of transmission lines. In addition, there is an equivalent number of transformers, switches, poles, and other devices that are maintained in GIS and SAP. The recording and maintenance of this information is a critical component in providing safe and reliable service to our 14 million customers.
Position Summary
The Mapping Technician, Electric classification is represented by Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) subject to collective bargaining.
Mapping Technicians access construction drawings, job estimates, maps, and other documentation contained in our enterprise systems such as Oracle and SAP using ESRI and Schneider Electric software. This data is used to update and maintain PG&E’s Electric Distribution, Transmission, and Land base Geographic Information Systems. Mapping technicians may be assigned additional tasks as needed to support projects and initiatives as required.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $36.81 per hour. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
Responsibilities
- Create, modify and update records, maps and diagrams using GIS tools, methods, and databases
- Ensure records, maps, and diagrams comply with federal, state and local regulations as well as company requirements
- Input data related to specific job-site and facility information for quality assurance purposes, historical tracking, forecasting and produce reports related to job-site data using computers
- Review and research work assignments and projects using computers
- Gather data related to records, maps and diagrams for specific job site projects
- Schedule and coordinate document distribution to meet applicable federal, state and local regulations and company requirements
- Research and prioritize documents for data input
- Use computer and other methods and tools for file management of job plans, records, maps, diagrams and other documents
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
- Must possess a valid California Driver’s License
- Significant relevant field or industry experience, or its equivalent in training and education (e.g. relevant 2-year technical degree, relevant technical/trade school certificate, bachelor’s degree BA/BS, or 2 years of experience with mapping, GIS, drafting, estimating, or CADD)
Desired:
- AA/BA/BS Degree from accredited college in GIS, Geography, Engineering, or other related discipline
- AA/BA/BS in unrelated field with a GIS certificate is acceptable
- Professional GIS certification through public organization membership
- Demonstrated experience using ESRI ArcGIS 10x to develop, edit, and maintain spatial data from engineering as-built drawings
- Understanding of geographic data types (land base/parcels, aerial imagery, electric utility infrastructure, etc.)
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products- Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and SharePoint
- Demonstrated experience or exposure using SAP
- 1+ year of electric or gas utility operations related experience
- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally
- Willingness to follow-through on complex assignments
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds, with assistance, a minimum of one time a day
