SCHEDULE
Work days and hours may vary as needed to include days, evenings, weekends and holidays. Required to report to work up to 45 minutes before sunrise during nesting season (March – October) and some evenings. Minimal hours in February, March, April, and October; full-time hours required May – September. Annual hours not to exceed 1300 per year.
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs difficult technical work involving marine turtle conservation including identifying and recording sea turtle nesting. Assist with the care, feeding, and maintenance of the indoor and outdoor aquariums and life support systems, as well as public presentations. May assist with the care and rehabilitation of sea turtle nests in the rehabilitation facility as needed. The work is headquartered at Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex. Work is performed under general supervision of the Marine Conservationist. This is a seasonal position (February – October).
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Conduct early morning beach surveys for sea turtle nests in Boca Raton;
Identify all nesting emergencies and non-nesting emergences;
Use non-lethal predation deterrents/irritants;
Record and report disorientation and predation events;
Excavate and inventory nests;
Properly mark, protect and record sea turtle activity (i.e.: nesting and crawls) and nest characteristics, including excavation date, on GPS
enabled handheld computers and upload data;
Provide proper care and husbandry to hatchling sea turtles prior to release and in the rehabilitation facility;
Assist with the care and feeding of educational resident sea turtles in outdoor aquariums
Respond to turtle and other marine animal stranding events including transport to Gumbo Limbo;
Assist with and conduct public presentations for sea turtle related programs (Turtle Walks, Hatchling Releases, school and camp programs, etc.)
RELATED TASKS:
Maintain equipment and clean storage areas;
Operate ATVs, utility vehicles, trucks and vans;
Operate radio to stay in contact with other staff members;
Assist Aquarist with indoor and outdoor aquarium food prep, public feeding presentations, water quality testing, and life support system maintenance.
Assist with transferring sea turtles in rehabilitation facility to other pre-determined facilities for tests and/or treatment as needed;
May assist marine turtle rehab staff in cases of emergency and perform initial assessment and triage of sea turtle as needed.
May assist rehab staff in providing appropriate care of sick and injured sea turtles.
Participate in onsite facility events and outreach events.
Attend annual meetings, trainings, and/or workshops associated with sea turtle strandings, nest monitoring, and rehab as required by the FWC permit requirements.
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must have the ability to learn quickly and complete tasks both independently and as part of a team. Must possess strong communication skills and be able to interact with the public. Accurate and efficient data entry skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Environmental Center staff, outside agencies, diverse groups, and individuals. Ability to respond to citizen and visitor questions regarding sea turtles, conservation, and their rehabilitation methods.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Currently enrolled in an accredited college with major course work in biology, conservation, marine science or related subject matter. Veterinary care and/or experience with sea turtles in a related capacity is preferred. Experience with GIS is a plus.
CERTIFICATIONS / PROFESSIONAL LICENSES:
Complete an ATV Certification Course within 60 days of employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid State of Florida Class “E” driver’s license with no more than six (6) points within a three (3) year period.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift, carry, and push articles weighing 50 lbs. Must be able to walk, dig, and kneel in sand and wade in water. May be exposed to extreme temperatures, harsh weather conditions, animal/insect bites, heights up to 40 feet, moving mechanical parts, dust, poisonous plants and sanitizing chemicals. Must be able to wear helmet and safety glasses. Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Ability to restrain live sea turtles of varying sizes and weights.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year
PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee’s supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.
MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
