Our mission of the University of Michigan Recreational Sports is to promote a healthy lifestyle through engagement, leadership, and activity. We operate multiple programs, four indoor facilities, and two outdoor field complexes. Our team consists of 36 full-time staff and over 650 student employees. Established in 1913, the department is considered to be one of the first collegiate recreation programs and is the first program to have a facility dedicated to student recreation (Intramural Sports Building, 1928). Recreational Sports reports to Student Life through the Associate Vice President of Student Life.

Job Summary

The Marketing & Engagement Lead will be responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the department’s external engagement strategy, advise the Student Life Communication, Marketing & Design Department on department marketing and communication strategy; advance new membership sales and develop current member retention strategies through engagement and promotion; direct sponsorship initiatives and research revenue growth opportunities. In collaboration with Student Life Communication, Marketing & Design, provide maintenance and expansion of electronic marketing mediums, such as the website, e-newsletters, social media, and production of newsletters, brochures, marketing materials, and press releases. Direct, create, and oversee the department’s marketing budget. Direct the department operations return on investment (ROI) metrics, including tracking and reporting. Develop and lead Recreational Sports collaboration efforts with academic programs to benefit both the academic program and the Department. Create sales forecasts, budgets, policies, procedures, and direct operations of all areas of oversight. Coordinate and manage department communication plans and social media platforms. Serve on assigned committees to represent the Department.

Responsibilities*

Marketing and Engagement (50%)

  • Manage and direct all department marketing and engagement strategies, deliverables, and plans to achieve objectives regarding revenue, profitability, and brand identity that includes collaboration with Student Life Communication, Marketing, and Design.
  • Lead the Department in the engagement of the campus community through informational, educational, and recruitment initiatives.
  • Update and communicate marketing dashboards and analytics on a monthly basis.
  • Create and manage an event calendar for engagement opportunities.
  • Analyze marketing and engagement campaigns and adjust strategy and tactics to increase effectiveness.
  • Provide post-event reports and analysis on the marketing program.
  • Ensure consistent use of the department brand.
  • Identify, analyze, build, and manage external and internal strategies for program partnerships, opportunities, and initiatives.
  • Create and manage ROI and ROX reports on departmental activities to determine efficiencies in spending and maximize return.
  • Develop and implement overall sponsorship sales strategy and goals.
  • Direct and oversee the marketing and engagement budget.
  • Develop and implement membership recruitment and retention efforts that aggressively increase revenues through promotional events and incentive programs to ensure goals are met.
  • Deliver presentations as required. Attend, or coordinate others to represent, the department at health fairs, expos, new staff training, etc. Continuously learn about department facilities, programs, and services, to be able to communicate information to constituents.
  • Develop, direct, and implement departmental programs in collaboration with the related academic program.
  • Develop and oversee ways to connect students within the related academic program to Recreational Sports with education, research, programs, internships, or other methods.

Strategic Planning (20%)

  • Direct and implement the process to formulate and carry out marketing and engagement planning efforts to ensure organizational effectiveness for Recreational Sports.
  • Collaborate with the Recreational Sports Executive Leadership Team to develop the planning strategies and programs that align with the department and Student Life strategic initiatives.
  • Engage with the Executive Leadership team and supervisor to carry out special projects as needed.

Fiscal Oversight (10%)

  • Prepare, oversee, forecast, and manage the operating budgets of areas of oversight; Establish and meet revenue goals. Supervise temporary staff payroll, including projection and approval.
  • Ensure compliance of operations with Department, Division, and University policies; work collaboratively with Departmental financial staff and the Student Life Human Resources office for timely and correct pay of employees.
  • Purchase and maintain staff equipment/uniform needs.

Staff Oversight (10%)

  • Provide supervision, direction, coaching, and mentoring of direct reports ensuring direct reports represent the Department in a positive way.
  • Evaluate and provide regular feedback to direct reports; ensure the hiring and development of student programming staff meets Department needs and goals in all areas of supervision.

Leadership (10%)

  • Provide departmental leadership; develop and enforce departmental policies.
  • Serve on committees or work teams to support the Department, Division, and University; collaborate with University colleagues to represent the Department. Serve as a member of the
  • Recreational Sports Leadership Team.
  • Evening and weekend work responsibilities, as needed; attend professional development opportunities, as assigned; other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Marketing, Business, or related field
  • Minimum of five years experience in marketing, sponsorship, or other strategic engagement work
  • Experience and demonstrated working knowledge of multiple social media platforms
  • Experience in sales or sponsorship work with demonstrated success of meeting revenue goals

Desired Qualifications*

  • A Master’s degree in Recreation, Marketing, Business, or related field
  • Experience in marketing campus recreation programs, facilities, and services
  • Experience in strategic planning of organizations
  • Experience in development and oversight of annual budgets
  • Experience in the successful development of students or staff
  • Sustained involvement in NIRSA or other professional associations

Working Conditions

On occasion could be expected to work evening hours or weekends to support Recreational Sports events

Physical Requirements

This position requires moderate physical activity in transporting marketing materials to and from events. Must be able to move and transport materials weighing up to 20 pounds.

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

The position is responsible for developing and tracking the budget, contracts, and financial reports for the areas of oversight. Typically, the amount of financial/budgetary responsibility ranges between $115,000 and $230,000.
