Marketing Communications Writer (COMM SPEC 3)

Job Summary The Marketing Communicator will work for both UC Davis Health’s Public Affairs & Marketing Department (PA&M) and UC Davis Health’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and support a mix of reputational, marketing and communication goals for UC Davis Health as a whole and for Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as a unit. The position scopes, writes and edits copy for written and electronic channels, audiences and purposes. Conducts background research. Identifies suitable visuals (illustrations, photography, etc.). Performs basic situational and standing proofreading, copyediting and quality control duties for clients within and outside of the marketing unit. Writes and manages production and distribution of Psychiatry internal quarterly e-newsletter based on content provided by leadership. Reviews, edits, and performs support maintenance of online physician biographies. Writes website content for PA&M and Psychiatry marketing web pages. Manages the creation, design, implementation, editing and maintenance of social media channels and platforms for Psychiatry. Other responsibilities include ongoing social media management for psychiatry, maintenance of targeted web sites for both psychiatry and UC Davis Health, maintenance of UC Davis Health’s online consumer-facing physician directory, and general proofreading and copyediting. The position reports to both the Marketing Editorial & Content Manager in Public Affairs & Marketing, and the Chief Administrative Officer in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and works closely with Public Affairs & Marketing’s primary social media team on both strategic and tactical bases.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field; two or more years of full-time professional experience in writing and communications-related work (including, but not solely, social media)
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in a communications/writing role that included social media communications
  • Knowledge of web usability principles, with demonstrated willingness to learn and achieve basic-to-intermediate editing proficiency in TeamSite content management system or institutional variant in order to perform job duties
  • Existing experience or proficiency with related web-editing tools (i.e.Dreamweaver, etc.) a plus
  • Strong knowledge of and work experience with social media platforms/tools and an understanding of audience demographics and how they use these tools (such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Snapchat)
  • Knowledge of and experience with social media monitoring and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, native reporting within social platforms; experience with Sprinklr preferred
  • General knowledge of digital audio and video recording equipment; experience operating equipment and experience with video and audio editing software; experience with live social broadcasting tools such as Facebook Live, Instagram Live, etc.
  • Solid knowledge of graphic design principles for non-complex written collaterals such as brochures, pamphlets and flyers are a plus to guide use of existing Word and InDesign template
  • Excellent, proven written communication skills with demonstrated ability to create accurate, compelling copy for a variety of channels on a wide variety of subjects, drawing from a variety of procured source materials, including written information and data and interviews with internal and external sources
  • Proven ability to compose clear, persuasive original copy and repurpose existing resources to meet a variety of objectives
  • Ability to shift and adapt writing style, voice, tone, and vocabulary/comprehension levels for varied audiences (i.e., ranging from 5th grade level to practicing physicians and physician-scientists) and also varied purposes (i.e., informative, technical, persuasive, motivational, educational; formal vs conversational, etc.)
  • Excellent copy editing and proofreading skills, with strong knowledge of composition, grammar, and punctuation, and ability to apply situationally based on desired audience and tone
  • Working knowledge of AP Style
  • Solid oral and interpersonal skills
  • Solid organizational skills, attention to detail, and discipline to independently complete new and routine tasks as assigned without close or constant oversight

Department Description

The Department of Public Affairs and Marketing plans, manages, and implements strategic communications (such as news services, public relations, marketing, internal and external communications) for UC Davis Health. Communications are aimed at a wide range of key constituencies, such as the news media, UC administration, UC Davis faculty, staff, and students, government/regulatory leaders, external physicians, business leaders, patients and health care consumers, and the general public.
