The Net Zero Science and Innovation team focuses on identifying, developing, and de-risking new technologies that will be necessary for Amazon to meet our environmental goals and commitments. We ground all of our work in science and collaborate with internal and external partners to accelerate innovation. We are a team that thinks long-term and seeks to disrupt the status-quo.
The team is looking to add a detail-oriented and self-motivated Materials Lab Engineer. In this role, you will work in our Seattle-based lab and be responsible for testing a broad range of materials, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting findings to stakeholders. Responsibilities also include maintaining equipment, improving safety, developing test methods, documenting procedures, and improving the overall efficiency of the lab. You must be a proven problem solver and have the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
Key job responsibilities
• Characterize a wide range of materials using a variety of analytical techniques
• Collect data, analyze results, and clearly present findings in both written and verbal formats
• Work with stakeholders in different business units to understand their material requirements
• Safely and efficiently operate lab equipment and design new lab tests as needed
• Collaborate with stakeholders across different internal business units

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
– B.S. in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc. or 3+ years work experience as lab engineer.
– Ability to accurately test materials and record data
– Experience with testing of materials using a mechanical load frame (e.g. Instron)
– Familiarity with ASTM / ISO testing standards
– Experience with data analysis tools, including statistical analysis
– Experience with Microsoft Office (i.e., Excel, Word)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
– Experience with analytical tools (e.g., electron microscope, X-ray inspection, infrared spectroscopy, gas and liquid chromatography)
– Passion for sustainability
– Experience in polymer-based materials and/or product packaging
– Highly detail oriented, organized with experience in 5S programs
– Insists on the highest standards for quality and repeatability in testing
– Self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $59,800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $150,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
