Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is seeking a motivated individual to join the Thermal Safety Engineering team. Thermal Safety Engineering offers unique opportunities to perform thermal safety analyses using fundamental heat transfer principles in support of nuclear fuel movements. There is a large variety of different analyses allowing for significant learning opportunities including: supporting design recommendations for long-lead material procurements, final equipment design certifications, safety analysis documents, procedures for fuel processing and long-term storage conditions. Analyses are performed using commercial finite element computer software, such as Abaqus, and hand calculations using fundamental heat transfer concepts. These analyses must pragmatically integrate operational needs while meeting program requirements, federal regulations, and system capabilities. The successful candidate will be challenged with characterizing heat dissipation of nuclear fuel within various pieces of equipment to assure safe operations during normal and accident conditions. This position will require the candidate to define work plans and carry out analyses while maintaining proper communication with immediate management and interface directly with project stakeholders.
