This role will be a member of the central communications team which our main goal is to raise awareness and build trust with multiple audiences around greater Portland. We are a diverse team looking for a passionate and emotionally intelligent teammate to join us as we share community stories, promote Metro council initiatives and highlight key Metro initiatives that aim to make our regional a great place for everyone.

The central communications team works across departments and the agency to ensure we reach a variety of audiences and stakeholders with clear, consistent and accessible information. Metro’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy is a visible and meaningful component of the department’s public-facing communications work. The team is responsible for development and distribution of , videos, and social media content to fully support the department’s communications goals.

The media and content coordinator will be responsible for collaborating with content creators to develop and implement successful social media content. They will oversee social media schedules, determine success or failure by pulling key performance indicators and suggest creative ways to engage with community and promote Metro’s brand.

This role will also work closely the Media Relations lead to develop intake process for media inquiries, develop templates and standard messaging, and provide coverage for media responses on a rotating basis. Metro seeks to grow its proactive media components and strategy while curating relationships with media partners.

As the Media and content coordinator you will:

  • Manage calendars, media lists, media coverage and maintain relationships with stakeholders, media and partners
  • Edits and proofreads social media content, videos, press releases and other communications deliverables
  • Organize inquiries from media and collaborate with partners for response
  • Develops public and media relations strategies to support overall messaging needs
  • Provides communications counsel, tactics options and suggestions to program staff across the agency
  • Measure web traffic and social media sentiment, monitor SEO
  • Demonstrated ability and/or experience applying a racial equity lens to communications planning and tactics

Attributes for success:

  • An understanding of communications best practices to identify opportunities to advance engagement by directly generating web content, social media posts and managing media relations
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms and trends
  • Demonstrated capabilities in content creation, metrics development and analysis, SEO/SEM campaigns, reporting on key project indicators
  • Administering vendor contracts, tracking invoices and procurement processes
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Empathetic listener who can express themselves clearly and maintain self-awareness
  • Ability to interact effectively with elected officials, representatives of other governments, senior management, associates and the public
  • Understanding of trauma-informed concepts to use when engaging with coworkers and community partners
  • Creative problem-solver who can co-create deliverables with teammates from a variety of stakeholders
  • Knowledge of media production, communication and dissemination techniques, tactics and methods (including alternative ways to use written, oral and visual media)
  • General knowledge of the principles and methods of web site information architecture and design layout
  • Capability to quickly and accurately translate technical information into a variety of publications and media so it can be easily understood by a general audience
  • Ability to converse, speak or write Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese or Russian is a plus
  • Preferred knowledge or interest in public information officer emergency management training

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, political science or a related field AND
  • 2 years professional level experience in Public Relations or Affairs OR
  • Any combination of education and professional or personal lived experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

Working environment: Our team works in a hybrid environment with flexibility of preferred working conditions. There may be an occasional need to meet on-site for meetings or site visits.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION

Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro’s internal equity review process, and the candidates’ qualifications, the appointment will typically be made between $66,352.00 – 73,132.80 annually. The full-salary range for this position is $66,352.00 – $88,982.40 annually.

This position is not eligible for overtime and is represented AFSCME 3580 union. It is classified as an Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions.
