Medical Malpractice Paralegal

The Medical Malpractice Paralegal position in Portland, Maine is responsible for assisting the attorney with preparation of files for trial and/or settlement, including: development of organizational systems, preparation and analysis of pleadings, selective legal research, file monitoring, formal and informal discovery, and photography. You will have a solid understanding of establishing effective working relationships with attorneys, staff, clients, and other professionals. This is a full time position.

Medical Malpractice Paralegal Responsibilities:

  • Develop organizational systems including deposition summaries, chronologies, document organization, medical research and medical chronologies. File summary and analysis.
  • Prepare charts, graphs and maps to assist with organization of file materials; demonstrative trial exhibits and trial notebooks; and appropriate pleadings which may include: subpoenas, request for production of documents, interrogatories.
  • Analyze pleadings, documents, correspondence, charts, graphs, maps, tax returns, jury pool summaries. Prepare memos to attorney to explain analysis done.
  • Obtain documents from police, motor vehicles, medical and court records, etc.
  • Monitor files, compose routine correspondence; assume responsibility for specific action in a file.
  • Perform routine legal and medical research as requested, using on-line as well as library resources. Prepare summaries of medical literature.
  • Perform tasks related to formal discovery, which may include:
    • Compiling answers to interrogatories and responses for production of documents by file review, interviews or correspondence with clients and obtaining outside information;attending production of documents meetings or client interviews; attending depositions, panel hearings, trials. preparing related pleadings.
  • Perform tasks related to informal discovery, which may include:
    • Traveling to courts, City, County and State offices, libraries and miscellaneous information resources interviewing non-party individuals; identifying and locating potential witnesses, including experts; extensive telephone inquiries.
  • Protect the confidentiality of client and firm matters.

Medical Malpractice Paralegal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent
  • Familiarity with courts and local administrative offices.
  • Knowledge of litigation procedures and practice.
  • 1 to 3 years of paralegal or legal secretary experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of a legal secretarial training course provided through a community college or business school is preferred
  • Ability to accurately type 75 wpm
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Strong command of the English language, including excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, form and style
  • Good knowledge of personal computers, system utilities and document production software. Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Word
  • Strong organizational skills for establishing workload priorities
  • Tenacity for tedious jobs; enthusiasm for challenges, self motivated and willing to learn and change; flexible, a team player.

Medical Malpractice Paralegal Details:

  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m to 4:30 p.m, 37.5 hours per week
  • Pay Rate: Starting at $33/Hr., more depending on experience
  • Start Date: ASAP
