ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mentors contribute to the overall success of a mentorship program for a cohort of 16 at-risk young adults, ages 16-24, living in the Brownsville Houses and neighboring areas. Mentors are responsible for implementing an evidenced-based curriculum designed to use cognitive-behavioral approaches in efforts to build stronger and safer communities by expanding opportunities for youth to move out of the criminal justice system and foster positive change through the transformation of attitudes that often lead to violence and/or criminal activities. Duties & Responsibilities:
- With two supporting mentors, run a mentoring group to young adults twice a week (2 hours per session) for nine months;
- Attend professional trainings and become proficient in delivering the cognitive-behavioral curriculum (“Interactive Journaling”);
- Assist in coordination of group activities, including New Member Orientations, mealtimes, training sessions, and field trips;
- Offer ongoing emotional support to group members as their designated “Primary Person”;
- Meet with group members on an individual basis during the week, before/after group sessions, or otherwise as needed;
- Be available by phone/email/text/etc. for support, advice, and guidance;
- Perform outreach to candidates and new members; maintain ongoing engagement; conduct re-engagement efforts and meet procedures when necessary;
- Additional duties as requested by the Program Coordinator.
COMPETENCIES
- Must live in or have a strong connection to Northern Brooklyn. Brownsville residents are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Flexible availability (including weekend and evening hours) required.
- Must be skilled in group facilitation. Candidate must demonstrate the ability to effectively keep participants engaged while delivering a cognitive therapy-based curriculum.
- Skills in communicating via mediums preferred by young people (e.g. SMS/text, social media, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter) highly preferred.
- Unique ability to deeply connect with youth; skilled at “winning over” hesitant/resistant individuals; and able to create a warm, inspiring, and fun-loving environment in any situation.
- Special consideration for individuals with personal experience similar to challenges facing mentees. (i.e. have been violence-involved, gang-affiliated, and/or justice-involved.)
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma and group facilitation training certificate. If no certificate, must have a reference that can attest to candidates ability to run groups
