The Opportunity and Who You’ll Work With:

The news anchor is an essential part of WBUR’s midday news service. It’s a big job, including both local newscasts for the Boston area as well as national newscasts for WBUR’s production of NPR’s Here and Now, which is aired by hundreds of stations around the country.

The anchor will write, edit, and deliver newscasts and continuity breaks during the midday broadcast period. They are a vital source of latest news and information and also a trusted companion. The midday anchor will also fill-in host for other WBUR programs, and will be an influential voice in WBUR’s newsroom.

You are a versatile, creative, self-motivated journalist. You’ll be able to shepherd the midday operation with calm and grace, even as news unfolds and crashes around you. You’ll make sure our local and national listeners have the news and information they need to get through the day, while also being a steady presence behind the microphone. You are relied upon to uphold WBUR’s journalistic and ethical standards, including (and critically) during breaking news cycles. Your news judgment will be impeccable, and you’ll give listeners the news they need to know in a way they can easily understand.

And, working in an ambitious, supportive newsroom, you’ll partner with WBUR editorial and production teams including journalists, producers, editors, and audio engineering professionals.

This position is in the SAG-AFTRA Bargaining Unit, and carries a minimum salary of $78,413.00 and goes up from there based on experience and internal equity.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Producing and executing midday local news headline breaks.
  • Producing and executing midday national news headlines for NPR’s Here and Now.
  • Executing midday continuity breaks.
  • Staying on top of the latest local and national news.
  • Reporting, writing, and editing news copy.

Onsite: This position will be onsite Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week.

Required Skills

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent/relevant experience
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in media, journalism, broadcasting, and/or audio production

Capabilities and Proficiencies:

  • An excitement about WBUR’s mission to provide an essential public good: high-quality local journalism and enriching experiences that foster understanding, connection and community.
  • A commitment to journalism fundamentals, including accuracy, fairness, respect, honesty and independence on air and online (for more, see WBUR’s ethics guidelines).
  • Strong teamwork skills, and experience collaborating with hosts and producers
  • Editorial experience in a fast-paced daily newsroom environment
  • An ability to adapt quickly to change
  • Attention to detail, and an ability to copy edit and quality check audio
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet multiple daily and long-term deadlines
  • Detailed knowledge of Boston, or a demonstrated ability to get up to speed in a new city quickly.
  • Must be willing to work in-office (Boston)
