Position Overview

At KIPP DC, we believe the quality of instruction defines the rate and quality of student achievement. Teaching and learning is at the core of everything we do. The role of an instructional coach is a position of leadership; the work is to support leaders and teachers in ensuring all students learn and achieve within classrooms that are intentional, rigorous, and joyful. The person in this position will demonstrate a relentless drive toward excellence and a commitment to ensuring that our instruction puts children on a successful path to and through college. This is an exempt position and will report to the Managing Director of STEM. The regional math coach position is a one-year role funded by ESSR funds and is currently designated as a 1-year role and will be re-evaluated at the end of SY 22-23.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The regional math coach role is not tied to a specific grade. While the responsibilities and general scope of work would remain the same as below, there would be a greater emphasis on data analysis, and additional support for our students who receive specialized instruction in our resource rooms. This role would also support elementary math material creation and alignment. This position would be responsive to what is happening across all of math K – 12 and support the most pressing needs at the time.

  • Curriculum development
    • Design culturally relevant math experiences and support educators in adjusting regional materials to meet the identities and needs of students
    • Create and revise math curriculum materials aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Curriculum materials include a coherent year long unit scope & sequence, unit plans, unit pacing calendar, aligned assessments, lesson plans and student materials
    • Develop and use systems to regularly solicit teacher and student feedback on curriculum materials to enhance cultural responsiveness, teacher investment and student engagement
    • Use formative and summative assessment data to evaluate and refine curricular materials
    • Design resources to support leaders and teacher in internalizing unit materials and lesson plans
    • Design resources to support leaders and teachers in analyzing student data and plan for responsive reading instruction
  • Teacher development
    • Design and execute weekly content team meetings to internalize curriculum, analyze and plan using student data
    • Support educators in adjusting regional materials to meet the identities and needs of students
    • Design and execute regional content PD to support teachers content and pedagogical knowledge and skill development
    • Use principles of adult learning to design and execute professional learning
  • Leader development
    • Facilitate weekly co-observations with the Vice Principal and/or Dean of Instruction to observe implementation of curriculum and application of pedagogy
    • Co-plan weekly teacher support through content team meetings, weekly one-on-ones and targeted coaching cycles
  • Analyze school wide student data trends and plan to respond through curriculum and coaching support
  • Support leaders in designing and facilitating professional development sessions
  • Use principles of adult learning to design and execute professional learning

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Collaborate with other regional teams to design and coordinate professional development and support for teachers and leaders
  • Participate in regional professional development and assume the role of a life-long learner
  • Additional responsibilities may arise during the school year. This will be communicated with as much notice and flexibility as possible

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Five years of math teaching experience required
  • Two or more years of coaching or leadership experience preferred
  • A strong track record of positive student performance results in mathematics, both in formative measures and high stakes exams
  • Experience writing rigorous unit, lesson plans and assessments
  • Expertise and knowledge of Common Core State Standards and key shifts in mathematical practices
  • Experience administering and analyzing common assessments (i.e. MAP and ANet)
  • A strong track record of facilitating teachers and/or leaders toward instructional improvement
  • Experience designing and leading compelling and useful professional development
  • Experience using multiple assessment measures and observational data to determine coaching and professional development necessary for the improvement in teaching and student performance
  • Well-read and current on best practices in mathematics
  • Excellent written and oral communication

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • The anticipated starting salary for this position is $84,179-$103,984. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
  • As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support, and this position will regularly provide on-site support to school teams, frequently partner with other headquarters teams, or regularly work in multiple locations. Because of the nature of the work, this role allows for occasional flexibility. This role will have approximately 20% flexibility to work remotely.
