Working in Solvay’s Material & Testing Laboratory:
You will join a team of 30 other technicians in the Materials and Testing Laboratory in Anaheim, and will be a part of the Materials Global Business Unit. The team is dynamic and works in close partnership with engineers and scientists, who contribute to growth, qualifications and research and development activities all related to the aerospace and/or automobile industry.
In your role, you will be part of the testing group, generating data in accordance with ASTM and other standards. You will be operating universal test machines, mainly MTS and Instron, so experience in this area will be advantageous. Job Overview and Responsibilities include:
- Maintain and improve Solvay’s product evaluation efficiency and accuracy. Provide testing & evaluation support to internal and external customers.
- Assure all data and inspection plans are accurate in LIMS.
- Work collaboratively at all times to support all functions, customers, and suppliers.
- Maintain accurate records of all work carried out. Manage projects and project documentation to an externally auditable level.
- The execution of work through the testing process to ensure its timely completion in line with Key X’s (test time and OTIF).
- Perform ‘clean as you go’ housekeeping practices.
- Participate in LEAN improvements and FOD Reduction activities.
- Communicate responsibly with engineers, scientists, and lab supervisors to make sure customer-specific needs are met.
Safety responsibilities include:
- Be an active contributor to Solvay’s Safety Goals and Culture (take action on any unsafe act, condition, or behavior, participate in safety teams and events)
- Demonstrate a commitment to good safety practices. Pay specific attention to the safety requirements for the operation of the Materials & testing Laboratory, and in accordance with Solvay and Government regulations.
Education and experience:
- At least a high school diploma or preferably an associate’s degree in a STEM related discipline, or 3-5 years mechanical testing experience.
- Must possess the ability to read English and comprehend technical writing as can be found in customer specifications and other relevant documentation.
- Must have good math skills and be proficient at operating computers including the use of Google ® or Microsoft ® applications.
- Basic understanding of composite products, the composite industry including resin families, fibers, test methods, and statistics.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong knowledge of composite materials covering a range of matrix & reinforcement technologies.
- Experience with composite panel fabrication, machining, or using universal test machines (MTS, Instron, Zwick, etc.) and data acquisition software (Test Suite, Blue Hill, Test Xpert, etc.)
- Three (3) or more years of experience working in an industrial setting.
- Good listening, communication and presentation skills.
- Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Must have a strong sense of urgency and drive (action-oriented) to succeed and improve upon the status quo.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple projects, team members, stakeholders, and commitments.
- Ability to establish good working relationships with Solvay personnel at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to effectively resolve team conflicts and manage problem-solving activities.
- Good understanding of database management, testing, and lab processes.
- Highly skilled in the use of G-suite products (Gmail, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
