Engaging. Connected. Creative. Norfolk’s Communications & Marketing Team is seeking a Multimedia Communications Specialist I with a passion for public service, public participation and creativity. The Multimedia Communications Specialist I works collaboratively with the Internal Communications team to create graphics and visual components that are strategically placed across the City intranet and other internal communications channels to inform city employees through innovative storytelling.
Multimedia Communications Specialist I duties focus primarily on creating compelling graphics and visual elements for both print and digital audiences while working collaboratively as a valuable member of the Internal Communications Team. Additionally, MCS I duties include some web design and content management across several City websites.
The Multimedia Communications Specialist I serves as an ambassador of the Department of Communications & Marketing and is expected to embody the City’s core values. This position offers potential for professional and career advancement for the successful candidate who demonstrates exceptional storying telling across a variety of platforms, outstanding attention to detail, organizational skills and a high degree of enthusiasm for public service in a demanding but supportive Communications environment.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Designs and illustrates original, engaging visuals and graphics to promote City content and stories.
- Writes copy and creates visuals that are strategically placed across the city intranet and other internal communications channels.
- Acts as a liaison to Human Resources, supports special events, and works collaboratively with Communications team.
- Performs administrative duties such as researching and writing reports, replying to inquiries regarding the intranet, reviewing and preparing statistical information for presentations, and monitoring and recording proceedings at meetings.
- Represents department and department interests at meetings.
- Demonstrates ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
1 year experience in communications or related field

Valid Driver’s License may be required depending on assignment.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
