Job Summary

The County of San Diego has a current opening for a Multimedia Designer to provide strategic communications and guidance on a wide variety of digital communications and services to inform and engage the public and employees.

Are you a creative and innovative digital designer with a passion for exceptional user experience? We are looking for someone to join our award-winning County Communications team as a Multimedia Designer with a focus on web and graphics.
This position will support the design, content and maintenance of multiple websites and digital platforms including the County’s news and information site and intranet site. It will also support external and internal communications, outreach and engagement projects aligned with the County’s mission, vision, values and strategic plan. The candidate will also work with departments and contractors to provide consultation following the County’s style, branding and digital standards. This person must understand design principles and analytics and be familiar with a variety of design software. We are looking for someone who is collaborative, solution-oriented and a good communicator. We are also looking for someone who stays on top of trends and best practices in design and visual communications to find new ways to reach diverse audiences with an emphasis on access, belonging and inclusivity. In addition, this position will provide support during a disaster, working in the Emergency Operations Center to provide critical information to the public on various platforms.IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will be creative and versatile, with experience in a variety of digital communications including websites, graphic sites, and email. Additional skills in photography, animation, video and audio a plus. The candidate will have enthusiasm for providing residents and colleagues an excellent customer experience and be committed to continuously developing new and innovative ways to produce content to inform the public. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to perform in a fast-paced environment among multiple projects with people throughout the organization to execute production demands efficiently. Excellent computer and presentation skills are also desired, as well as the ability to train others.
The ideal candidate’s skills will include advanced skills with the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience with website design and configuration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of user experience and design principles including fundamentals of page layout, typography, and digital accessibility.
  • Ability to work with and learn a variety of publishing platforms which may include Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), SharePoint, WordPress, Squarespace or other content management systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience with Adobe Creative Cloud which includes the latest versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, XD, Spark and Acrobat Pro.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience of languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript a plus.
  • Experience creating online newsletters, as well as digital and print graphics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of web analytics.
  • Testing and reviewing websites or apps for functionality and design (familiar with User Acceptance Testing/UAT process and reporting).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience with social media tools and platforms (demonstrates support, understanding brand guidelines, widgets with APIs).
  • Familiar with design thinking methodology or human-centered approaches (focuses on the customer’s needs, supports community engagement and equity).

HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

  • Interviews, Job Offers and Background Process begin in October 2023. (Current County employees may be exempt from the background process.)
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in graphic design, web design, multimedia design, visual communications or a closely related field AND three (3) years of recent full-time, professional experience in one or more of the areas listed: web design, graphic arts and digital video editing.

Note: Recent work experience is defined as work experience within the past five (5) years. Education and or work experience in web design, graphic arts, digital video editing and/or related work experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
