The Museum Interpreter is a benefits eligible 3/4 time part-time position that supports both the Curator of Education and Museum Assistant in the execution of tours, programs, and education activities. Primary duties will include leading and engaging Shawnee Town 1929 visitors in high quality costumed living history programs, costumed school programs, and non-costumed general guided tours. This position will also serve as one of the key points of contact for museum visitors. Additional duties will include assisting with special mission-based events, training volunteers, attending education trade shows, and program development. The individual in this position will report to the Museum Director, and will gain a basic understanding of regional history, visitor interests, and local and regional resources; and will have the desire to share their knowledge and passion for history with visitors of all ages. The hiring salary for this 3/4 time part-time position begins at $19 per hour (DOQ).
Position Responsibilities
Interpretation. Assist with and perform costumed living history interpretation for museum visitors of all ages including school groups, adults, families, and lifelong learners. This includes working in historic buildings and settings, and talking to the general public; as well as performing historical lifeways tasks such as demonstrating crafts, gardening, light animal husbandry (chickens) and cooking. Provide non-costumed guided tours and present programs on a regular basis to the general public. Engage visitors in hands on activities appropriate for the time period.
Education Activities. Assist Curator of Education with, and serves as point of contact for education related activities, including virtual and in-person program and experiences.
Set Up and Tear Down. Set up and take down the assigned work area for each program prior to and after use.
Training. Attend mandatory training on interpretive techniques, program content, and working with visitors. Assist Museum Assistant and Curator of Education with training. Act as a resource for volunteers for history related issues.
Program Development. Assist with program planning and developing supplemental materials for interpretation using a variety of mediums and technology.
Mentoring. Assist the Curator of Education, Volunteer Coordinator, and Museum Assistant with training volunteers for a variety of programs on and off-site.
Research. Assist museum staff with program, exhibit, and object research.
Special Events. Assist with special event set-up and take-down, and work during the event. Perform a variety of tasks and responsibilities to contribute to the success of special events. Assist Curator of Education and Museum Assistant with tour and living history-related aspects of special events.
Community Calendars. Update and maintain online community calendars.
Media. Will be in front of a camera from media outlets and in-house personnel. Will be the subject of still photography and film.
Safety. Ensure the safety, security, and cleanliness of the work area. Is familiar with safety requirements of the job and general work area. Identify and report workplace hazards and follows safety procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or the equivalent.
- A passion for history is desired. Must be proficient in online historical research.

Work Schedule
This is a 3/4 time part time position that generally works 1,500 hours a year. Hours vary depending on the museum schedule and the program season. An average of 40 hours a week is worked during the summer, 30 hours a week during the fall & spring and 20 hours a week during the winter. Must have some availability for weekends and evenings.
