This position is located in the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department, CNRSW, San Diego. The incumbent works at the Fiddler’s Cove Marina, Naval Base Coronado providing instruction in various boating and water recreation activities.

Duties
- Plans, organizes, provides instruction in boating activities such as sailing, sailboarding, canoeing, and kayaking. Tests and verifies proficiency for licensing to use MWR boats and equipment. Issues certifications and licenses for Navy Sailing, and documents certification.
- Demonstrates and teaches the safe methods, procedures, techniques, and use of boating equipment for the specific sport involved. Using standards established by US Sailing and the US Navy, teaches the safety aspects, theory, techniques, procedures, and methods for sailing including the Rules of the Road. Using standards of recognized organizations such as the ARC, ACA, and others, teaches the safety aspects, theory, techniques, procedures, and methods for other water sports activities.
- Acts as an official at recreational activities involving the specific sport involved. Leads activities in aquatic and marine recreation. May transport participants to and from activities via van, bus, and boat.
- Performs housekeeping duties to instructional boats including cleaning and washing. Performs housekeeping duties to classroom, dock, and other areas used for instruction. Maintains, stores, and orders equipment and materials used for instruction.
- Enforces safety precautions and regulations. Makes rescues including person overboard, capsize, turtle recovery, and towing disabled vessels. Using personal discretion, ensures the safety of participants during instruction. Directs and leads assistants to aid when necessary for class control or safety reasons.
- Using hand-tools and small power tools, makes repairs to boats and associated equipment. Performs periodic maintenance to rigging, motors, boats, electronics, and sails used in the instructional program. Performs safety checks and preventive maintenance to instructional boats and equipment.
- May work in the capacity of a recreational aid (dock attendant I and II) involving issuing boats and equipment, cashiering, maintaining records, and assisting patrons with rigging and un-rigging rental boats.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate possess the following:
– Must be highly knowledgeable in the field of their specialty and have an understanding of kindred fields.
– Must exhibit an excellent sense of public and customer relations
– Must have effective communication skills as well as be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, including MSDS’s (Material Safety Data Sheets).
– Must be a mature individual who can capably exercise control over a group of participants
– As necessary, must possess, or at the first opportunity be able to qualify for:
(1) ARC, Green Cross, or AHA CPR certification
(2) ARC or Green Cross basic first aid or higher certification
(3) Basic rescue or lifesaving training (in-house training provided). ARC lifesaving training preferred.
(4) Certification as an instructor in the specific sport that incumbent is teaching. Recognized certification includes US Sailing sailing instructor, US Sailing sailboarding instructor, ARC or ACA Canoeing/kayaking instructor, NAUI, PADI, YMCA, or NASDS diving certification.
(5) Valid California drivers license
– Applicants holding current certification in the above will be given priority over those still needing certification
– Must be able to qualify for Navy respirator protection program
– Must be able to swim at a level equivalent to US Sailing instructor minimum skills
– Must have knowledge of basic ship systems and parts. Should have experience in boat rigging, maintenance, and repair
– Must be able to safely operate small motorboats in adverse conditions. Coast Guard licensed UOPV or higher operator preferred. Must be able to qualify for USCG licensed “limited operator” and meet the requirements of 46 CFR 10.205 including participation in a random chemical drug test program.
