What You Will Do:
- Independently manage complex projects in field & from design/development standpoint for maintenance of existing ITS projects
- Travel to maintain and perform upgrades to complex ITS devices/infrastructure
- Troubleshoot software/hardware problems using a computer & related software
- Review project documents and r esearch new products/technology to enhance roadway safety and performance
- Acts as lead work (i.e., provides work direction & training to lower-level support personnel)

Official Position Description:
In the Office of Traffic Operations, independently manages complex projects in field & from design development standpoint for maintenance of existing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) projects (i.e., determines work required, develops & generates rehabilitation plans, develops rehabilitation layouts, analyzes conditions & determines project scope). Uses a computer & related software (e.g., computer-aided design & drafting (CADD) & inspects & reviews plans & documentation for complex ITS projects to ensure compliance with plan & specifications & approves use of contingencies (i.e., quantity & plan design as stipulated by contract). Travels to perform maintenance &/or repair of complex ITS devices (e.g. Active Traffic Demand Management (ATDM) & Connected & Autonomous Vehicle Applications, Smartlane, Variable Speed Limits (VSL), Complex Fiber Optic Systems, Network Devices) throughout the state & operates equipment to reach equipment (e.g., bucket truck). Develops fiber termination diagrams & reviews fiber optic test reports for compliance. Provides guidance to contractors/consultants during implementation of ITS-related systems. Assists with the development of ITS standards, specifications & guidelines. Assists in determining scope & schedule of ITS projects. Provides network support & evaluations for all devices associated with statewide ITS. Troubleshoots software/hardware problems using a computer & related software (e.g., Ubiquiti AirControl & AirOS Web Interface, Command Line Interfaces (CLI) with Network Switches, Terminal Server programs, Milestone Camera client, Bosch Configuration Manager, Ethernet Tester, Fluke CIQ-100). Devises new approaches to problems within the ITS system & helps develop working solutions. Uses a computer & related software (e.g., Microsoft Word & Outlook) & prepares written correspondence & reports relative to ITS. Conducts prequalification & performance testing of ITS devices to ensure that submitted equipment meets Departmental specifications. Provides oral or written reports to management based on findings. Confers with equipment manufacturers &/or suppliers to discuss hardware or software issues detected during testing or repair procedures.
Acts as lead worker (i.e., provides work direction & training) & routinely reviewing inspection reports & work performed by lower-level transportation technicians &/or transportation engineers &/or other support personnel). Monitors fixed asset inventory for specific areas (e.g., ITS Laboratory, Signal Shop) using a computer & related software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Enterprise Information Management System (EIMS)) & by keeping inventory organized & assisting in yearly inventory checks. Investigates & researches new technology that may improve the ITS by reducing replacement cost & system downtime. Maintains maps of field traffic control & detection device locations using a computer & related software (e.g., CADD); documents daily work & activity reports (e.g., Service Now). Maintains accurate records of field device troubleshooting & repairs.
Cleans offices & garage; loads & unloads freight; arranges stock in warehouse; operates equipment (e.g., forklift). Performs various work-related duties as requested by supervisor (e.g., travels to attend training seminars, meet with vendors & various partnering agencies).
Qualifications
2 yrs. exp. as Transportation Technician 1, 85873, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled.
-Or completion of associate degree program in engineering technology; 5 yrs. engineering related technical experience in simple & standard construction/ rehabilitation/maintenance projects or planning & design of simple & standard civil engineering projects or materials testing, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled.
-Or 7 yrs. trg. or 7 yrs. exp. in engineering related technical experience in simple & standard construction/rehabilitation/maintenance projects or planning & design of simple & standard civil engineering projects or materials testing, with experience to be commensurate with positions to be filled.
