Summary
These Market Analysis and Hedging (MA&H) roles evaluate and execute portfolio strategies (Merchant and Customer Portfolios) and provide market and portfolio analytics for NYPA.
- The Analytics team review market and portfolio trends, provide insight to market fundamentals for Portfolio managers, and management of our valuation and risk models.
- The Hedging team provides stability to our Portfolios by managing, executing, and recommending hedging strategies to the various NYPA portfolios.
- The Customer Portfolio team manages and drives portfolio risk mitigation strategy on behalf our NYPA Customers. #LI-VB1
Responsibilities
- Execute operational task in a highly organized and consistent manner.
- Establish and maintain formal procedures for team functions with definitions and standardization of Portfolio.
- Execute ad-hoc support to team/projects.
Analytics
- Execute detailed daily functions such as publishing and reviewing daily Merchant Gross Margin report.
- Monitor and analyze energy and ancillary market trends.
- Support Portfolio Managers in reviewing valuations for annual budget setting process.
- Support NYPA’s annual LFRP (Long Range Financial Plan), monthly MA&H executive summary and quarterly fundamental and market outlook report.
- Develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders.
- Create and enhance existing list of performance and operational management reporting.
Hedging
- Assist in the development of power price forecasts for NYISO zones and buses of interest.
- Monitor prices and market development for energy, capacity, ancillary, renewable and fuel.
- Conduct generation dispatch, revenue forecast analyses and capacity forecasts for NYPA’s major generators for the current year plus four additional years.
- Support Portfolio Managers in hedging analysis and presentations.
- Provide Operational Support to Hedging team, ie reconcile brokerage, trade checkouts, master agreement reviews, etc.
Customer Portfolio
- Review monthly installed capacity (ICAP) certification data to ensure generator values are correctly accounted for by the NYISO.
- Monitor the market, competitive conditions, and associative variables for the formation of capacity markets bid strategies which influence pricing and availability.
- Review past bidding performance metrics by the GRM Traders and report on those metrics as they relate to NYPA’s individual generating assets and their performance in the marketplace.
- Research capacity markets in neighboring service territories to evaluate cost of imports and effect on NYISO market & NYPA assets.
- Monitor & provide input regarding the changing ICAP market rules (i.e. – in-city mitigation, locational requirement changes, demand curve development etc.).
- Produce and review weekly metrics. Monitor and analyze energy, ancillary and market trends. Review opportunities and characterize trends to assist the GRM Traders in their bidding strategies. Develop and enhance performance measures to monitor performance.

- Introductory level knowledge of NYISO Market and Products (ie capacity, energy, ancillary or fuel markets) and Power Plant Operations.
- Proficient in MS Office (specifically Excel)
- Preferred experience in database programming and querying using SQL, MS Access, VBA, SAS and Oracle.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Business, Engineering, or related field required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in an analytical field.
- Experience in financial derivatives, utility ,commodities or energy industries
Physical Requirements
- May require travel to attend conferences and customer meetings. Travel is primarily within New York State.
